Camille Ralphs shares what some of our greatest writers have said about literature as a vocation. Read the full essay bit.ly/3VYy459
Black text on a white background. The text reads: John Keats said poetry should come as easily as leaves to a tree, or not at all; Rilke said you have to look inside yourself and ask Must I write? Not everyone who'd answer Yes is well known now, but everyone who's well known now would answer Yes. On the bottom of the graphic, there is a silhouette of a pegasus and the words: Camille Ralphs on poetry as a vocationText featuring a quote from Camille Ralphs: I've held roles as a barista in a service station, a university librarian, and a salesperson in a school uniform shop. Wanda Coleman, not to be bettered, was at certain points an actress, a Peace Corps recruiter, and an editor at a softcore porn magazine. But no experience is wasted on the work—or on the life. There is a pegasus silhouette at the bottom.A hand holds a paper circle against a backdrop of undecipherable handwritten text. Radiating red and orange lines extend from the circle, creating a sun-like effect. Artwork by Anthony Gerace.A quote with black text on a white background reads: It is good to write every day—even if only a line, a seemingly fatuous observation; even if you're only adding phrases to your notebook or your Notes app. Inchoate things—and habits—have a way of starting to cohere. Below the quote is a small illustration of a pegasus in flight, with the text: Camille Ralphs on poetry as vocation.

The main reason you haven’t heard about campus sexual violence in a few years is because Trump and SCOTUS have made it much, much harder for survivors to come forward. You might vaguely remember that Title IX was a big battleground in his first term. And that we lost.

Somehow I'd forgotten that Sidney's "The Defence of Poesy"—whose title he changed to "An Apology for Poetry"—says right up front that poetry has "fallen to be the laughing-stock of children." Just brutal.

Not a conspiracy. The tech industry generally targets edtech and defense. General users are important, but the real, long term cash flow is in education and defense. They will often pour lots of money in, and once they have enough investment it's harder for them to pull out.

Good gracious:
From The Guardian:

[Muriel] Spark’s collapse, described by her doctor as “anxiety neurosis”, took the form of a persecution complex about TS Eliot, whom she believed to be sending her hostile messages in the programme notes of his play The Confidential Clerk, and in his blurbs for Faber. Eliot’s words, jumping about on the page, reshaped themselves into anagrams: “lived”, for example, became “devil”. Eliot had also, Spark believed, broken into her flat to raid her larder; he was posing as the window cleaner to her friends the Braybrookes, in order to pry into their papers. Afraid of being followed, she wore dark glasses when she left the house, and spoke sotto voce. Her doctor prescribed the anti-psychotic Largactil, and in October 1954 Spark went to a Carmelite retreat at Allington Castle in Kent, where she turned her experience into her first novel. Her recovery took place as the novel evolved.

Audre Lorde, 1976:
BICENTENNIAL POEM #21,000,000

I know
the boundaries of my nation lie
within myself
but when I see old movies
of the final liberation of Pars
with french tanks rumbling over land
that is their own again
and old french men weeping
hats over their hearts
singing a triumphant national anthem

My eyes fill up with muddy tears
that have no earth to fall upon.
