“Search engine” is actually a terrible thing to use AI for. It gives results that look plausible very quickly, often mostly right, and in order to check them you have to do more & different work that feels like a waste when results are kind of right, so you just trust the thing because it’s easier

Apparently ICE arrests are at an all-time high and I'm guessing they've managed that by decentralizing. Focus on a specific urban area, and you get a lot of targeted resistance. Anyway, helpful reminder that ICE are literally everywhere and we should all be watching out for our neighbors.

In my opinion, a failure to understand the white-hot rage so many people feel about ICE's campaign of terror and oppression is what has taken some establishment Dems by surprise in their primaries. Abolish ICE and Nuremberg 2.0 is basically the floor for what the Dem electorate is demanding.

Meltwater, a poetry collection by @cwahmanholm.bsky.social, illuminates just what you are describing with deft and expansive tenderness, dread, and wonder. Here’s one of several prose poems in the book titled “Glacier,” which I think about often.
GLACIER
The room was huge and cold. The glacier's skin smelled like pine, snowcloud, bog, lichen. There were stanchions around the ice so the audience wouldn't touch or lick its weeping face. Some people had brought their children. Our brains stuttered. Who could ever-What would possess-Who would want— I didn't like the exposure.
Whenever I heard a spurt of knee-high laughter, whenever a child looked up at me thinking I was its mother, I felt stripped of another layer of clothing. Everyone knows that children smell fear, but they smell shame even better. By the time the lights dimmed I was naked and didn't know what to do with my hands and arms. I couldn't cover everything. For an additional five hundred dollars you could mount a ladder and point a hair dryer at the glacier for two minutes. With your gun of hot air you could shape the surface into pits—a gentle divot for an eye, a more forceful one for a mouth.
You could make sweat run from armpits, from the small of a slick back. Any meltwater was yours to keep. We had heard that some people had vials from all fiveglaciers lined up on their mantels like Hummels. Pictures were free but we didn't take any. It felt pornographic all that melting, all those crowds. One couple recorded their entire session, the machines blinking and blinking, their voices tangling as they narrated. I stared at the ceiling. I rubbed the ticket stub in my pocket until it pilled into pulp. We didn't talk in the car.
When we got home I was so thirsty. Like wanting to have sex after a funeral. I stood in the shower and let the water spray haphazardly into my mouth. There was so little I hardly had to swallow. I bent over the sink and cupped my hands to my mouth over and over and over again. I put my mouth directly over the faucet and hummed. This sounds like a metaphor but isn't. I'm just talking about water.

Not a conspiracy. The tech industry generally targets edtech and defense. General users are important, but the real, long term cash flow is in education and defense. They will often pour lots of money in, and once they have enough investment it's harder for them to pull out.

Wow. Proponents of the ICE taser gloves are openly saying that one reason they love the gloves is that they doesn’t leave any marks or proof that they were used, making it harder for people to sue when they’re shocked excessively.
Mother Jones

"In today's society, you know, everybody's filming everything, everybody has a cell phone," Glueck said. If an officer punches someone on camera, that can go viral in an instant; even a standard taser leaves puncture wounds. But "the glove is low optic, and it looks better on camera, and it looks better to those witnesses. With a glove, there are no burn marks or scars."But local police across the country are still eagerly buying the gloves—in large part so that they can harm people and avoid being sued for it. It's been successful "from the patrolmen to the jailers," Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard said in a Compliant Technologies promotional video. "It's been a great tool as far as mitigating liability," according to Nelson County Jailer Justin Hall.
Bob Couey of the Floyd County Sheriff's Department sung the GLOVE's praises, too: "I highly recommend these gloves to anybody that's looking for a utility they can use that is conducive to not leading to lawsuits."
