Is your union bargaining for protections against AI? Want to strategize wall-to-wall against big tech’s takeover of higher ed? Come to Chicago 10/24 for “Against the AI Campus: Building Power in Higher Ed,” co-hosted by HELU @higheredlabor.bsky.social & UICUF. Register: tinyurl.com/HELU-EdTechAI
OCTOBER 23-24, 2026
UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS-CHICAGO
AGAINST THE AI CAMPUS: BUILDING POWER IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Employers and legislators are pushing EdTech and Artificial Intelligence (Al) through universities and colleges across the U.S. Higher education workers need a comprehensive response that builds our organizing capacity through bargaining and advocacy campaigns that allow us to build power around these critical issues.
We are seeing Al and EdTech being pushed on workers in community colleges, four-year institutions, and research universities, public and private alike. The scope of this concerted attack by tech companies and federal, state, and local governments begs the question: Who is actually benefiting from it?

HELU and our partners in UIC United Faculty AFT Local 6456 are hosting a day-long deep dive into higher education, EdTech, and Al. This workshop is aimed at: understanding and producing contract language that protects workers; strategizing together to create a national organizing model against the technoligarchy; creating legislative frameworks locals can take to their state legislatures and Congress; and deepening workers' understanding of the issue.
