what has happened in the years since? we have gone from bush/rove sneakily putting in fascism, alongside romney and mccain, to trump just saying "yeah im a fascist and im fucking proud of it." and the dems keep saying "come on guys, stop him." its chamberlain in an american accent.

a big part of ossoff's rhetorical success is it doesnt contain the compromise and caveats that are a baked-in part of democratic party rhetoric. theres no pretending that his opponent is just misguided or will be pulled back from the edge by "the good republicans." ossoff is saying "fuck this guy"

It sounds weird, but politicians who violated 'banking laws' were once considered 'disgraced'. No becoming president, no running key House committees, no pardons, if you were caught violating 'banking laws' your career was over and the headlines would call you 'disgraced.' I wonder what changed.

Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good. I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."
Ukrainian female soldier: Okay, I said the idea is this: There is enough time to empty one full can of 32 grenades and be gone by the time the return mortar fire reaches us. I did the math.

As a reminder, Democrats picked up 41 seats in the House in 2018, while losing two seats in the Senate. We should see a bigger pickup in both chambers this time, to put it mildly. But do not get cocky and coast here. Run through the tape.

Yeah, it's definitely a DEI plot that prize-winning histories are often about minorities. Couldn't be that those works represent the cutting-edge research into fields that *haven't* been mined to death like Great White Men Histories and also have compelling underdog stories people love. Nah. DEI.
Much the same goes for the Pulitzer Prizes. Of the past 10 years’ worth of winners for music and drama, nearly all have been minorities. Whether or not the winners are themselves minorities, they almost invariably win for work about minorities. For the prize in history, Kathleen DuVal won in 2025 for her history of Native American nations; Jacqueline Jones in 2024 for her account of Black workers in Boston during the Civil War; Jefferson Cowie in 2023 for his examination of white supremacy in an Alabama county in the 19th and 20th centuries; W. Caleb McDaniel in 2020 for his story of a former slave’s fight for justice in post-Civil War America; David Blight in 2019 for his biography of the abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
