“There are few more beautiful or striking scenes in England than are presented by the vicinity of this ancient Saxon fortress.” When Sir Walter Scott published Ivanhoe in 1819, he transformed Conisbrough Castle into “Coningsburgh”, an imagined ancient seat of Saxon kings. In reality, its great
The 12th-century stone keep and ruined curtain walls of Conisbrough Castle, a medieval fortress located in South Yorkshire. It was built around the 1170s or 1180s by Hamelin Plantagenet, the half-brother of King Henry II. ruins inspired Sir Walter Scott to feature the site as the home of Cedric the Saxon in his famous 1819 novel, Ivanhoe Image: sctkirk CC BY-SA 2.0

Scott had glimpsed the castle from a mail coach in 1811 and was captivated by its romantic appearance. In Ivanhoe, it becomes a meeting place between Saxons and Normans, whose reconciliation symbolises the creation of a shared English identity.

Yet Scott’s vision also reflects the racial thinking of his own age. He portrayed Saxons and Normans as distinct “races”, while the novel contains antisemitic stereotypes, particularly in its portrayal of Isaac of York. At the same time, characters such as Rebecca expose the persecution and prejudice faced by Jews. Modern scholarship therefore sees Ivanhoe as both challenging prejudice and reproducing some of the racial assumptions of the early nineteenth century.

Published in 1819, the year of the Peterloo Massacre, the novel’s theme of reconciliation gave its medieval setting a distinctly contemporary resonance: an imagined past used to explore identity, division and the possibility of unity.

Mike Graham is a controversial character. His recent jokes about Andy Burnham’s father suffering from Alzheimer’s have landed him in hot water. Whether you love him or hate him, one thing you can’t deny is that he has devastatingly good looks and is a really handsome chap.😬

Truly vile. At a public event, Mike Graham mocked Andy Burnham’s father for having Alzheimer’s, less than three weeks after Roy Burnham died and apparently on the day of his funeral. Just the lowest of the low.

Early 80's. Me a bricky's labourer, my wife a student nurse. Our first house, £11,450. 10% deposit was roughly 11 weeks pay on my wage. Fast forward to today and 10% deposit on average house for someone earning average wages and you're looking at roughly 10 MONTHS pay. We had it way easier.

Brexiters are back to their old populist trick of comparing the EU to perfection and finding it wanting. Never fall for that. Compare the EU to the reality of Brexit Britain — and be aware that the EU itself knows it can never be perfect, which is why it's the Commission's job to suggest reforms. 🇪🇺
