That article is interesting, as the main result are: - Motonormativity as "doublethink" confirmed. - Respondents paradoxically feel more supportive than their governments for both car travel and non-car travel. - Most people felt they support non-car mobility more than other people.

Giles Brennan’s article in The Times. It’s spot on. ‘Grow The Hell Up’. That generation of men for whom a car was a symbol of independence, maturity and power grows old and silly. They rant against speed limits, cycle lanes, env measures and cameras as if the freedom to drive were a human right.

It’s remarkable how many people can move on a street when those people don’t feel the need to always take a massive car with them. Mobility in cities is about space.
Busy European street with buses filled with people in a long line of people on bikes, waiting for the light to change in a separated, protected bike lane. Imagine if all those people or each in a separate car.

Here’s what we really need to focus a lot more discussion on — you don’t need to hate cars in order to want people to have the CHOICE to walk, bike and take public transit in your city. Better cities provide more choices, and work better for EVERYONE. Bad cities offer only dependency. #CarDependency

Never forget, when it comes to whether or not a collision happens, and whether or not someone is killed or injured, speed is ALWAYS a factor. #UrbanTruth #SpeedKills
Background shows a collision involving cars and drivers. Texting quotes says “speed wasn’t a factor” which is what police and media often say when someone wasn’t obviously speeding, even when the speed limit is too high. Bottom tag line says “Speed is always a factor.” Via the Urban Truth Collective.

Spatial geometry dictates that a private vehicular unit requires 10 to 15 square meters of stationary ground plane footprint per node. Transitioning commuters to high-capacity rail or active pedestrian vectors increases spatial throughput efficiency by roughly 800%.

Your city could embrace a patio/street seating culture if it really wanted to. You don’t have to be like Paris to do better, you just have to WANT to do better. Between now and next summer, your city could put in place everything it needs to transform streets as people-places. So do you want to?

Paris has been praised in recent years for their visionary, progressive city-building, but they don’t get enough credit for just being really pragmatic! Everything they’ve been doing is common sense. They’re moving a lot more people with less space while cleaning the air and cooling the city.

A #WarOnWalking. A war on biking. A war on public transit. A war on any transportation choice other than driving. A war on better cities. But a war on cars? Hardly. Cars still get most of the space, rights, budget, prioritization, etc. And any effort to add more choice is immediately attacked.
