I was once fortunate to chauffeur Jan across Winnipeg. He followed along on a paper map. Was intrigued by how many porches are closed in with windows because of winter. He appreciated the city’s bones. Loved the boulevard trees, old neighbourhoods, and downtown heritage buildings.

Note that this wouldn't mean people would stop driving cars. It just means they would reduce unnecessary car usage. That's all it would take. #yegbike #urbanism

The WAR ON WALKING has taken many forms around the world. It’s often as simple as how we signal who space is and isn’t for. Once our eyes are opened to all the ways we’ve prioritized cars over people, we can’t unsee it. Frustrating photo contributed by @stadsplanering.bsky.social. #WarOnWalking

Multiply that $15k times the 8 million cars in Virginia and you’ll see that Virginians spend an additional annual $120 BILLION on clinging to a car centric transportation network.

Sometimes the WAR ON WALKING results in no sidewalks at all. Sometimes they put “something” in — but does that really make things walkable for anyone except those without any other choices? The #WARonWALKING takes many forms, but it’s always about making things comfortable for vehicles, not people.
Image of a wide concrete overpass with a huge truck travelling dangerously close to a thin, uncomfortable looking concrete “sidewalk.” The text says “Don’t buy the lie that there’s a war on cars. They’ve been waging a war on walking for a century.” Tagline at the bottom says the Urban Truth Collective. #UrbanTruth #WarOnCars

To be clear, the #WARonWALKING is a big tent that includes the war on safe and efficient urban biking, on workable and well connected public transit, on all ages and abilities accessibility, and more. It’s a war against better cities with more real options, and a war for car dependency. #UrbanTruth

Jaywalking a completely American construct, based on industry lobbying, which doesn't exist in law in UK. We are free to run into traffic wherever we like (except motorways). But pedestrian casualties are lower here because drivers have to take responsibility.

Of all the concepts I’ve developed, Healthy Spatial Entitlement is the one I’m most proud of. Taking up space isn’t inherently positive—there are healthy & unhealthy ways of occupying space. Understanding this nuance is vital for the repair of civic life across physical, digital & imaginative space.

If you live in an urban or suburban area and most or all public amenities are too far away for most people to walk, that did not happen by accident and it does not have to stay that way.

With our kids now #BackToSchool, never forget that we ARE the traffic that we’re afraid of. If more kids walked, biked or rode transit to school, it would erase a LOT of car trips each day, and our kids would be safer, healthier and better at school as a result. HT Ian Lockwood. Spread the word.

Investing in a smart PEDESTRIAN STREET in your downtown isn’t just a “cost.” We need to talk about how much the status quo of a distressed street is costing all of us, and the BIG return-on-investment that’s possible. Plus when it comes to the politics, it’s not “right or left,” it’s smart or dumb.

Many urbanist speakers have packaged speeches they give around the world. Such speeches can be great & inspiring, & help cities. But @brenttoderian.bsky.social’s approach is different, probably because his real job is advising cities. He wants to help THAT city. Like last year in Kingston, Jamaica.
