Thinking about how plants and animals, who independently evolved multicellularity, both landed on the spatial expression of transcription factors as the way to figure out where all the parts go.
A diagram showing the MADS domains patterning a flower. Gene expression goes from the outside in with A,B,C,D, and E domains. E is expressed in all cells. In some cells, there is A and E expression, those cells develop into sepals. Cells with A, B, and E expression become petals. Those with B, C, and E become stamens. Those with C and E become carpals, and C, D, and E cells become ovules.Hox gene expression in the fly. The genes are shown in order on the chromosome and appear in the same order in the fly. The first gene patterns the mouth, the second the forehead, the third, the back of the head, etc.
