For my particular GMing style, the best things about it are the Quest of the Week model and the excuse to indulge in deep worldbuilding. It's an experiment I may try again, but I'm more likely to just use parts of it as needed in the short term.

I think the West Marches model has a lot of great stuff in it and you can totally mine it for parts without committing to it wholesale. It's great if you love making sandbox worlds without needing to drive how your players engage with them.

Also: if you're excited about doing the whole WM experience with travel procedures and resource management, hold on loosely to that stuff. It wound up not engaging my group's interest that much and it can eat up a lot of session time.

I think it's a mode that works great for players who like to engage with the game when you're not actively playing, and not everyone is up for that. I ended up doing a "here are three potential quests for this weekend, pick one" and that worked okay.

That is *not* a slight on my players, who are a great group; I think they just weren't prepared to have strong goals to pursue. I did talk about this need in session 0, but in retrospect I could've made a bigger fuss about it.

Some of the things that wound up being challenges: the players HAVE to be motivated to choose something they want to do. That was possibly my biggest frustration; I was hoping for more proactive "let's go check out the abandoned wizard tower" energy and it didn't quite happen.

The good: being able to play/run when everyone can't make it. Having every session be self-contained makes things easy. It also helps when that's part of your pitch: play when you can, no pressure to commit to a regular game.
