The odds aren't looking good right now even with him being a "brand name". Remember that his screenplays for Steve Jobs and Being the Ricardos weren't nominated, so we may reasonably conclude that the writers' branch isn't quite so enamored of him they'll immediately support a film of his.

I really don't think The Social Reckoning's reception has been positive enough for Sorkin to get a nod.

Watching S19 of Taskmaster. Mantzoukas is bringing exactly the type of energy I wanted to see on this show. Also, I now have a bit of a crush on Stevie Martin.

Weirdly, the ending put me in mind of The Brutalist, another film I had mixed feelings about on the whole, but concluded on a scene I loved. Through perfectly deployed needle drops, both endings hold a mirror up to the audience and asks us to question the way we engaged with the film we just saw.

I have my problems with Digger, but it's strange to read some negative reviews shrugging it off as just a straightforward attempt at satire a la Don't Look Up when it's much more ambitious than that. The ending shows that it's up to something trickier, not as easily categorizable.

still thinking about this david zaslav story
In July 2019, the Zaslavs were on Geffen's yacht, sailing around the Mediterranean with a crew that included Winfrey, King, and Lloyd and Laura Jacobs Blankfein. One night, they decided to screen the award-winning BBC comedy Fleabag, which was made by a production company that Discovery now owns but which Zaslav hadn't gotten around to watching. A minute into the first episode, the group found itself in the midst of a hot and heavy sex scene. Pause! "So I put my hand up," recalls Zaslav. "I go, whoa! So they stop it. And I said, 'Okay, here's the strategy. We either shut it off, or we put it back on and everybody only looks forward. We don't look at each other until it's over.' " (They opted for the latter.)

Once I'm done I'll probably be going through the Disney Renaissance films, many of them for the first time, which I've been intending to do for an even longer while.

For the first 2 projects outlined, I will be focusing only on the films that seem the most intriguing to me. There are a fair amount of Oscar nominated films, for example, that I have no interest in ever seeing (Crash, Green Book, etc.), and I'd like to keep my workload manageable anyway.

Been meaning to embark upon these projects for a while now, but was really motivated to do so only recently, by the myriad of marathons the estimable Tim Brayton's been doing lately. I doubt I'll be reviewing as many films as he does, however.

To narrow down which films to make priorities from my massive to-watch list, I've decided to restrict myself for the next while to only the following: catching up on acclaimed 2020s films; BP-nominated films of the 00s/10s; and 1st-time viewings/rewatches I didn't get the chance to finish.

Samantha is just an AI. She can't actually feel emotions, she's just been programmed to simulate them to accommodate Theodore's needs; a fundamental issue with what Her is attempting to do that I can't get past. There's room to interpret it as a critique of people's attachments to...

Her (Jonze): Finally having caught up with this in 2026, this is interesting in the ways in which it both has and hasn't aged well. As timely as it is, it's also very much a 2013 view of AI. Trouble is... that's kind of the barrier that kept me from fully connecting to the central romance.

I have a ridiculous amount of films in my Letterboxd watchlist, keeping track of every single film I plan to or may see in my life, yet somehow I only now just discovered that Sing Sing and The Third Man (yes, I haven't seen it in full) aren't included, for some reason.

NW: Perfect Days. This movie has a unique habit of using songs I always found melancholic or ominous in a positive or hopeful context; usually movies do it the other way around. By the way, I'm loving this movie.

Seven (rewatch): I forgot how masterful this is, having taken it for granted over the years. If anything, it's Exhibit A in how direction can elevate a script, as this is material that easily could've been turned into a faux-edgy slog in the hands of less talented director. What Fincher does is...

Story 5: Super Frog Saves Tokyo by Murakami. Didn't care for the tired and predictable twist, but enjoyed how the dryly comic/wistful tone eventually gets disrupted by a genuinely disturbing climactic scene.
