Some LLMs accidentally evolved better math ability. Those were artificially selected because of their benchmark performance (and the rest were killed). This is the reverse of the creationism vs. evolution debate: people ignore the creation process and claim that it's an innate LLM ability.

"Explain how that happens" is a legitimate request! And critique! I am happy to explain all sorts of ways LLMs could hurt humanity, but all of those explanation involve careless people doing careless things. Not rogue software. I do not like this moment in time where nobody cares how things work.

As the opposite of a computer toucher, I sometimes worry that I'm not keeping up with the development of things. Luckily, I'm smart enough to realize that if the "most dangerous" LLMs need warehouses full of GPUs to function, they can't just "break out" and start running on random PCs.

"my LLM is so powerful it's dangerous and risks breaking containment!" "ok let's destroy it" "oh, haha, no. no." "let's intensively regulate your company then" "oh, no. no. look can you just put it in the newspaper that it's powerful"

I wonder how many people will see this and never know that, so far, at least some of the solutions have been found to build off of and plagiarize existing work without siting it? Everyone always sees the press release but never the debunk that comes later: archive.ph/JCl4g#select...
The discovery stunned Francesco Fournier-Facio, a mathematician at the University of Cambridge, who studies group theory—at least until he “engaged with this breakthrough as I would if a human had written it,” he says. The result, he and some of his colleagues found, wasn’t as novel as it first appeared. Like a number of recent AI breakthroughs, it pasted together ideas from the mathematical literature to build a new theorem. Once again, the LLM’s trick is its superhuman patience for assembling puzzle pieces, not the ability to make some profound intellectual leap.
In particular, Astra’s key mathematical step combined ideas first found in two papers from 2016 and 2019. Andreas Thom, a mathematician at the Dresden University of Technology, who co-authored both papers, summarized the result on MathOverflow.com, calling it “creative and at the same time elementary.”
OpenAI’s initial press release seemed to ignore—or be completely unaware of—these crucial, recent developments. Fournier-Facio argues that the two preceding papers show humans had not hit a stalemate with the soficity problem. OpenAI’s mathematicians did their best to attribute these ideas correctly in their paper, he says. But, in spite of their good intentions, “there is the big PR machine that wants to sound as impressive as possible and does not care about being 100 percent accurate,” he says.

Think about it this way: what if your tax dollars were used to buy sophisticated surveillance equipment and guns, and then the cops never killed your dog? Wouldn’t you feel ripped off?

This isn't true, at least not yet. Most generative AI leaves very distinct digital signatures that aren't so hard to spot. That might not be true forever, of course, and things are changing fast ... but I strongly suspect we could tell the difference with relatively early generation image.

The orgniaziational disrespect of tacit knowledge as a standard practice in business culture, long pre-dating AI, is one manifestation of the social dynamics that would eventually fold into the post-information society.

this is what happens when you're "skeptical of woo" in a way where you don't actually know what woo is and how it sustains itself in the world, making your skepticism toothless: a skepticism consisting not of robust analysis of difficult-to-integrate experiences, but of simply not having had any yet
Tyler and many colleagues felt skeptical of any hint of woo. But when they met Anna-Lisa, they agreed to stay the night anyway. “The next day, Anna-Lisa and her assistant practitioners gather us in a circle,” Tyler says. “We start out all making the same ‘huh!’ sound while synchronously throwing our hands toward the group. At the start, I made eyes with other Leveragers as if to say ‘get a load of this!’ but eventually, I started entering a trance-like state. Then Anna-Lisa brought me into the center and started waving her hands around my body, snapping, making little breathy sounds. I felt sensations starting to move through my body that made me shake. According to people watching, my body was instantaneously responding to even gestures that she made behind my back, which I couldn’t see.”

Interesting that Orban has not said that the "election was rigged or fixed".

an apparently Hungarian bsky user responds with:
The organization of the elections here (I'm in Budapest now) makes it nearly impossible to rig them. It's all paper ballot counted on-site.
