Dr Ally Louks @drallylouks.bsky.social · 02/12/20242. I’m currently working on two postdoc projects: one on cultures of olfactory dysfunction and one on olfactory queerness. Any reading recommendations welcome for either! And can explain more (still just spread a bit thin at the moment) 163507
Dr Ally Louks @drallylouks.bsky.social · 02/12/20243. For anyone who isn’t on X, my thesis is titled ‘Olfactory Ethics: The Politics of Smell in Modern and Contemporary Prose’. I’ll include the abstract here so everyone can see which texts I worked on and a summary of my ideas. 8084775
franssomers.bsky.social @franssomers.bsky.social · 12/12/2024Damn, you saddled me up with such a great reading list for the holidays🫣. Can't wait for the trade edition! 010
WHAT WAS THAT?? 🧬⛓️ @pitachip-draws.bsky.social · 03/12/2024Reading your abstract brought me so much joy bc I loved reading abstracts and excerpts of dissertations when I was in undergrad (got my BA in English!) I’d be super excited to read through it if/when you decide to publish it 030
John Grönvall @pluti.bsky.social · 04/12/2024Congratulations Doctor! 🙌🖖 I’ts easy to forget and overlook the power smell when writing description in scenes. Clearly the connotations are instant and powerful when used with skill. Looking forward to reading your work once it becomes available 000
Josiah Edwin @jedwin00.bsky.social · 04/12/2024Congratulations Dr. Louks! As someone slogging through the writing of my thesis, I am amazed at how innovative an idea this is and having a thesis with no corrections! I hope you look back on the challenging mountain you have climbed with pride. 000
Dr Ally Louks @drallylouks.bsky.social · 02/12/2024Thank you all for the warm welcome - it is much appreciated! 646989
Bonnie @bonnie100.bsky.social · 13/12/2024How fabulous! I loved the book Smells and can’t wait to read about it from a lit perspective (married to a Baudelaire expert so another reason) 000
RaineyScribbles @raineyscribbles.bsky.social · 02/12/2024I’m so so sorry the weirdos on Twitter melted down that you got your phd 020
Annie He @anniezhe.com · 27/12/2024I’m wondering if you have covered this topic in ancient China. Ancient Chinese people believed that the incense elevated their quality of life. Perfume also played a role in ancient China’s politics (Zhou and Qing dynasties). I heard that the traditional perfume ended under Mao Zedong’s rule. 110
ndmartinxyz.bsky.social @ndmartinxyz.bsky.social · 03/12/2024This is what came to my mind: McCourt "In pubs, steam rose from damp bodies and garments to be inhaled with cigarette and pipe smoke laced with the stale fumes of spilled stout and whiskey and tinged with the odor of piss wafting in from the outdoor jakes where many a man puked up his week's wages." 000
42 @droho.bsky.social · 03/12/2024Glad to see that the response to posting this on BlueSky is 100% more adult than over on the hellsite. I’m looking forward to seeing more on your ideas. Thank you for opening my eyes (nose?) on something I’d never thought about before but is absolutely of interest to me. 010
0xפנתן @pnathan.bsky.social · 03/12/2024Honestly I am now idly wondering of the, hm, non literature side of this. How smell is used in journalism and other non fiction writing. 3am thoughts from a non specialist who hasn't done the reading... :) 000
Cliff Winnig @cliffwinnig.bsky.social · 03/12/2024I’d like to read your dissertation or any book that you produce from it, when available. I’m not an academic, but I am a fiction writer, mostly fantasy and science fiction, genres whose texts can attach a whole host of meanings to olfactory imagery. Congrats on your successful defense and your PhD! 020
Astrealix @astrealix.bsky.social · 02/12/2024Honestly idk how anyone has a gripe with this, it just sounds interesting as shit. Never thought about the use of smell in literature before, even though it's such a common thing — grade school always just emphasised sight and hearing. Congrats on the PhD! 170
Cory James Rushton @crushton.bsky.social · 03/12/2024That looks fascinating! Many congratulations on your achievement. 010
Bisexual Terminator (She/They) @feralpolecat.bsky.social · 04/12/2024This sounds super interesting & intriguing! 000
fisherking1000.bsky.social @fisherking1000.bsky.social · 02/12/2024I'm sorry this happened to you. I just defended you there by saying you should have titled it "The Politics of Smell: Who Stinks the Most" so that people would get the point. 010
DannoHung @dannohung.bsky.social · 07/12/2024It’s not mentioned in the abstract, but is the cognitive biology of human olfaction relevant to your analysis? For instance, did you come across Dr Arshamian’s 2022 paper? I’m interested in the ways that scents are commonly perceived vs not. 010
Michelle Ashwood @illyriamoonsong.bsky.social · 04/12/2024Sounds really fascinating. I’m sure your work will be much better received here. 000
Catherine Winters @catherinewinters.com · 02/12/2024Oh wow, this is actually super relevant to a project I'm currently working on, and I'm keen to take a look when it's available. 010
abolish silicon valley @teefofgod.bsky.social · 06/12/2024I desperately need your take about the prevalence of pheromones & specific niche smells in omegaverse fiction. 000
Titia @titiaetxav.bsky.social · 08/12/2024Congrats on the PHD.Think your topic is fascinating in many ways! Too bad people could not resist trolling you for no valid reason but hey ho, what’s to expect from a society so convinced you can think and judge in 280 characters? Loved the perfume btw, was an earthquake to me when I read it. 010
Wanessie.bsky.social @wanessie.bsky.social · 03/12/2024Really fascinating topic. I love looking at history and humanity through the lens of media - the stories we tell and how we choose to tell them. 010
Richmond Eustis @reustis.bsky.social · 02/12/2024Terrific texts, and insightful grouping. This must have been fun. 010
misanthropicbrock.bsky.social @misanthropicbrock.bsky.social · 04/12/2024Good. Finally off the dying carcass that is Elmo's musty twitter X. Brain cells are well presevered here. 000
Joanne Harris @joannechocolat.bsky.social · 06/12/2024What an interesting idea. I'd love to read it when the time comes... 020
Nuggins @nuggins.bsky.social · 03/12/2024I wonder how many of your trolls sell essential oils for a pyramid scheme while highlighting how much of your brain is activated by the sense of smell. 000
OnBlueSky @onbluesky.bsky.social · 02/12/2024This sounds so awesome. Smell is an important part of the memory of a situation, a setting, an atmosphere, a memory. Kudos and thank you for choosing this work. 010
CKJohnsonBK 🇺🇦🇬🇱 @ckjohnsonbk.bsky.social · 03/12/2024So cool! (CW for anti-semitism) I remember reading the first part of a famous French writer’s novel, and it described a pervasive, foul “Jewish” stench left in an apartment by its previous Jewish occupant. It shocked and viscerally conveyed to me the quality of French anti-Semitism in the period. 000

forgivemysyntax @forgivemysyntax.bsky.social · 05/12/2024I don't really get how someone could think this isn't interesting. love the abstract. impatiently awaiting the paper. shit made me nostalgic for my ib lit classes in the best way. man i miss having english classes. 040
caliban.bsky.social @caliban.bsky.social · 03/12/2024Thanks for this, I (as a non literary person) struggle a bit with the very academic wording but I’m pretty sure I’ve grasped the gist of what your research is about. 010
simbol01.bsky.social @simbol01.bsky.social · 03/12/2024You're welcome to bluesky. Followed you on twitter, but the basement dwellers are so much there 010
Ruro @ruro.bsky.social · 03/12/2024As someone who was born with anosmia, it confused me well into adulthood why people would ascribe goodness to a nice scent and badness to a nasty scent. I'm really looking forward to the day you make your thesis public. This sounds interesting! 040
Kaycee Rae @kayceerholmes.bsky.social · 04/12/2024THRILLED to read this when it is available. This sounds fascinating!!! 010
Pamela Banting, PhD 🇨🇦 @pamelabanting.bsky.social · 06/12/2024In solidarity from western Canada, here is a link to my one and only article on olfaction, "Bears and Scents of Place": pdfs.semanticscholar.org/c724/9de529a...pdfs.semanticscholar.org 000
Fatoom @fatoomdraws.bsky.social · 03/12/2024I very genuely wanted to ask, specially since you based your work mostly on fiction. Do you touch on or thought of including the Omegaverse? I just think the trope tho less formal than prose, could be extremely interesting under these lens of research 110
dreaper.bsky.social @dreaper.bsky.social · 04/12/2024Reminds me of the study where they had females smell a shirt of various men sweat in shirts and the choices tended towards the man who was more fit or conventionally attractive. Or how people react to a homeless person on public transportation by avoiding or hush commentary on the odor. 010
Andrea Ball @andreacaroleball.bsky.social · 07/12/2024This is absolutely fascinating to me as a congenital anosmic. I suspect every single word will be a revelation to me. 020
Jake Lara @jakeypoos.bsky.social · 03/12/2024Certain types of cheese and old socks If you blindfold people and say to them, do you recognise this smell as old socks while letting them smell some cheese, without their visual prejudice how many would say yes that's awful those are old socks 000
Steve Munger @stevenmunger.bsky.social · 03/12/2024That looks really interesting. I look forward to reading the papers as they’re published. 000
Sung Kim @sungkim.bsky.social · 03/12/2024I am bit curious. Why isn't "Perfume" one of your listed book? 100
Tim Wookie @devilhat.bsky.social · 08/12/2024Hi, Doc! Welcome to BlueSky! :) Request: if you post screenshots of text, could you include the Alt tag too, for people who can't read the screenshot, please? Thanks much. Have a great week. :) 010
Bill Bereza @bereza.bsky.social · 04/12/2024When I think of smells in literature, I immediately think of the smell of cooking kidneys in Ulysses. Is the thesis more on bodily smells or others as well? 000
Justin @justinpinner.bsky.social · 03/12/2024Blimey, I never even thought to think about that before. Yet another example of an entire field of study that escaped my conciousness entirely and makes me realise as I get older that there's so much I just don't know. Thanks, and congratulations! 020
🦦 @ahamadnooh.bsky.social · 02/12/2024I will not lie this is a really interesting topic, people don’t realise how important the sense of smell is not only how it shapes opinions and perceptions but also the way we interact and interpret others. It’s a shame it was received with such vile comments on the other app. 150
ChloePolitiCat @chloepoliticat.bsky.social · 03/12/2024Fascinating way to explore and interpret literature, Ally. Congratulations. 010
Janey Salisbury @serendipitysmith.bsky.social · 04/12/2024Congratulations Ally 🥰. It sounds really interesting and something I've given no thought to before. 010
I be in the house @hersdayatoms.bsky.social · 03/12/2024This is dope. And the Toni Morrison & Bernice McFadden refs 🤌🏽✨ 040
Steve Collins @stevecollinsyji.bsky.social · 03/12/2024It doesn't stink so much here. ;) We're glad to have academics here because knowledgeable, smart people are the ones we can learn from. 000
Nstaf @noah-starfursky.bsky.social · 03/12/2024I’m not going to pretend I’m going to read the thesis but I just want you to know I’m sure it’s great and you deserve the best! Be proud of your work. The best part about academia is it allows us to explore any and all angles. New thought and reflection is as important as anything. Congrats! 100
Palesa @palaeoprotpalesa.bsky.social · 03/12/2024This sounds very interesting. I would love to read your work once it's out! Congratulations on your PhD! 🥳🥳🥳🥳 010
Pir Faisal Qureshi blue 🔹 @pirfaisal.bsky.social · 19/12/2024Never read such a surreal and strange topic like this in the history of English literature. 010
mwic @mwic.bsky.social · 06/12/2024Sounds pretty cool. Though the circumstances suck, the silver lining might be that you have a large number of willing buyers/readers when you do publish.. I for one can't wait to read the section on Parasite. 110
Old Hobbit🐸 @oldhobbit.bsky.social · 03/12/2024So we have five generally accepted senses, very important we all agree, someone studies the cultural context of one of these, and .... people are kicking off about this? Madness. 180
Spensierata 🇨🇦 @spensierata.bsky.social · 03/12/2024I'm not gonna lie: this actually sounds really cool. 000
Bella, Faithful Coyote 🌹🌲 @localwawacoyote.bsky.social · 03/12/2024Honestly after reading that abstract I’m particularly interested in the section on class, what sparked your interest in this topic? And what was the biggest challenge you encountered during your research? 000
RadFem @radfem.bsky.social · 03/12/2024I will read anything olfactory-related. So many of our decisions, preferences and actions stem from what we smell. The entire field of psychology ignores the olfactory. Why is that? How that is recorded in prose is important. Looking forward to reading your thesis. And welcome to Bluesky! 020
IntergalacticTowel @intergalactictowel.bsky.social · 02/12/2024The average hateful misogynist would struggle through a few sentences of this and decide, after a brief moment of bafflement, that expressing violence is the proper response. Amazing. Welcome to a better place. Looking forward to reading the completed work when you release it. 010
Eunice Beatrice Braga @ebbandflowph.bsky.social · 03/12/2024You had me with that first paragraph! 010
