so i've always thought that flat earthers/etc were mostly using the notion as a rhetorical strategy to undermine basic scientific facts and reasons as a means of sewing discord and distrust in institutions to further a christofascist agenda, are you telling me there's some guys who just believe it?

We got a regular crew of them who hand out pamphlets in town and have hand drawn signs, they're there most days. Really old guys mainly Such a regular feature in Chester a bar round the corner named itself The Flat Earth

those are the reasons why people tend to get hooked on anti-establishment anti-science conspiracy theories like flat earth (or creationism or moon landing truthers or whatever) in the first place, but once they go down the rabbit hole they end up convincing themselves and each other that it's real.

A guy killed himself in a homemade rocket he built to "prove" it was all just an illusion. I'm sure his primary motivation was more about wanting to build and ride a rocket for the hell of it, but he certainly had a lot of flat earthers egging him on.

so many people do genuinely believe it. and some try to do real science to prove their ideas. the problem they run into is either poorly designed experiments or starting with their conclusion and not accepting differing results (usually a mix of both)
