Middle Earth feels rooted in "The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles," commissioned by Alfred the Great to recount him leading the 4 kingdoms against the Norse (the ancient orcs) in the Danelaw (Mordor.) Originally pagan, but after the Normans drove many people into the woods, they would dress up as green men and come down in raids. Lots of Norman churches have green-men gargoyles. 110
