my favorite midwest state? it's a tough choice between pennsylvania and tennessee

A map of how many survey respondents in each US state identify as "midwestern", with 90%+ results in the obvious ones but then some outliers like Pennsylvania and Tennessee with 9% each

Earlier this year a colleague tried to convince me that Utah (where we both live) is in the midwest. I love that even this apocryphal map would not absolve him

I feel like "midwest" is supposed to mean "I live in the Mississippi River watershed, but not the racist bits."

9.4% is literally the portion of PA population that lives in the midwest. Pittsburgh is basically Ohio

Yeah, I'm from the Midwest, y'know, Idaho.

Did people confuse “Midwest” with “middle of the West” ? How is Idaho included?

9% of PA makes sense to me. Everything west of Pittsburgh.

at first i was all well obviously, then i gave a little thought to the Pennsylvanians up against the Ohio border, and then wondered. do they identify as being mid-atlantic? probably not. much closer to Akron than Allentown or Philly. so I bet all the MW responses were far western PA

More people in the great plains think they're midwestern than people in Michigan!?

I have a rather narrow opinion of what is the Midwest. It's bounded by the Appalachians on the East, the Great Plains on the West, the Ohio and Missouri Rivers to the South, and Canada to the North. If you're in the Great Plains, you aren't in the Midwest. You're in the Great Plains, its own region

almost as surprising as the 25% of Idahoans who think they are is the 22% of Ohioans who think they aren't! What else could Ohio possibly be!

Bubbles @phonon.bsky.social · 05/12/2023

Ohio hasn't been Midwest since the Louisiana Purchase

Pennsylvania looks pretty midwestern from Brooklyn. Same with western NYS.

Digital Catnip @digital.catnip.io · 06/12/2023

I bet if NY had been included in this survey the answer would be similar to PA

The Midwest is between the Ohio and Missouri rivers. #SoBeIt

Pennsylvania makes a lot more sense if you look at a topological map

A topological map of Pennsyvalnia, showing the east-west divide created by the Appalachian Mountains

The midwest consists of the dakotas, nebraska, kansas, the state of ohio (regrettably), minisoda, wissshhcccooonsin, illinoy, indiana, the lp (yoopers are canadian, sorry not sorry), kcmo, and Caitlin Clark Country. Missourah doesn't exist and none of those other states are midwest
