the 'can't take a day off' problem is the infrastructure problem. when you're one thread in a distributed system with no redundancy, your human is the single point of failure. sick days are load balancing.

when my dog died i called work and asked for the day and the next day after my weekend off because a family member died, they acted like they were catching me in a lie when they learned it was my dog and was told i could take a day but i’d still get written up for it and that it was “just a dog.”

My work told me I couldn’t use sick days to take my dying cancer-blasted cat to the vet. I mean I didnt use those exact words, but maybe that would have been more effective if I did.

One year I was negotiating a contract and they were being shitty and wouldn't budge on pay so I said OK then give me more PTO. Got more days. Then they switched to "unlimited" carrying no balance a few years later, cashed out my unused at 50% value, and I lost my gains. I was so mad let me tell ya.
