Disc golf day! Riding the scooter out to Lobdell was great! Course is really nice, although the grass was already inexplicably wet even BEFORE it started raining. Weirdest bit was all the holes that you just throw at a gap in the treeline and are expected to go play from the next clearing.

I've don't think I've ever been in a position where I needed to have a favorite bird but the Eurasian magpies that we saw in Madrid now hold that position. It doesn't show in this pic but they have brilliant metallic blue among the black and white. Like crows but with style.

Heck yeah saw some trains today. Taking the train from Madrid to Toledo was awesome. I think we're taking the high speed version tomorrow to get from Madrid to Seville. We gotta get some of these in the US. I don't care how.

One of our good friends and neighbors ended up in the hospital last week and has been steadily getting moved to even more intensive care and yesterday probably a dozen or so other owners got together to talk and figure out how and where we can help.

This is so, so well-articulated.

People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

The Gestapo was a secret police force. No warrants. No courts. No lawyers. And no appeals. People vanished in the night, not because they broke the law, but because the law no longer meant anything. The knock on the door was the sentence.

ICE isn’t that. Not even close.

ICE is a public agency enforcing laws passed by elected officials. Its agents file reports. They seek warrants. They lose cases. Judges stop them. Lawyers challenge them. Some detainees go home. That’s not tyranny. That’s bureaucracy, for better and worse.

You can hate immigration policy. You can argue enforcement is too harsh, too sloppy, or too broad. You can work to have the law changed if you wish. That’s a republic doing what it’s supposed to do.

But when you call ordinary law enforcement “the Gestapo,” you cheapen real evil. You turn history into a slogan and suffering into a metaphor. And once every badge is tyranny, no tyranny is left to recognize.

In Mississippi, I was raised to believe words should earn their weight. This one hasn't yet. It throws around the language of dictatorship while living under a system where courts still rule, lawyers still argue, and the government still loses.

That difference matters.

Because the day enforcement becomes secret, unchecked, and answerable to no one, we won’t need to borrow names from history. We’ll know exactly what we’re dealing with.

And we’ll wish we’d kept our words honest.”

Walked to dinner at Osteria Pizzeria last night. Had the garlic bread, the salsiccia pizza, and tiramisu. I kept hearing about this place from neighbors and man, I get it now. I usually favor cheap pizza but this was absolutely worth it. Especially loved the garlic bread (unsauced cheese pizza)
