I listened to Ed Davey on the Today programme this morning, and frankly, I think he missed the point. The idea that we're keeping the triple lock to help millennials is at best for the birds, and at worst downright insulting. I say that as a millennial.

I have a new essay in the newly relaunched IPPR Progressive Journal. It’s intended as a sober assessment of the political economy of Britain’s energy challenge, as we move from the old, dying fossil fuel system to the new world of electrification onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....

💯BBC keep reporting as fact what is kite-flying by industry sources and a small number of loud figures in Labour/Unions who are trying to bounce government into a decision. How it twice ended up as the top story on the BBC website before vanishing into nothing I don't know - poor editorial decisions

The most funky stuff is of course the CCS angle. Offshore O&G is a competitive place for investment, why would you spend (and lose money) on a CCS hell scape rather than say low cost offshore African development? Conclusion: you wouldn't. And the article does kind of mention it's unviable.

Zoe Avison @zoeavison.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
Keeping fossil fuels in the ground is the goal, not extracting them, dispersing the carbon to the atmosphere and hoping we can capture it back later. We already have great clean tech which can displace far more carbon with far less risk. Let's use them.
110
Zoe Avison @zoeavison.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
And while CCS is a proven tech on a small scale, and will be needed in certain industries, even Equinor has only stored 20m tonnes of CO2, as Jacobs says. It is aiming for total storage capacity of 30-50m tonnes/year by 2035. Rosebank alone is 254m tonnes of CO2e, nvm other projects this would allow
111
Zoe Avison @zoeavison.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
3.It's a boring point but there is no governance framework to make sure companies actually meet their CCS obligations, no way to verify it, no way to make sure it's additional. Rosebank is nearing the final stages of its application - it's far too late to construct the policy architecture you'd need
200
Zoe Avison @zoeavison.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
(NB, why should the UK billpayer/taxpayer actually PAY to support this scheme when we could just reject Rosebank?!)
200
Zoe Avison @zoeavison.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
2. Then there's the timing. Rosebank's production, if approved, would peak in 2033. If you get to 2035 and its developers turn around and say this level of capture is now unfeasible or wriggle out of it some other way (hello powerful oil lobby), most of the damage has already been done.
210
Zoe Avison @zoeavison.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
1. Additionality. For this proposal to make sense, you need to prove that the emissions captured wouldn't have been captured anyway. If Rosebank's developers pay for CCS at a cement plant that would have installed it anyway, the capture is not additional.
120
Zoe Avison @zoeavison.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
But the proposal to approve Rosebank with a condition that its developers pay to capture an equivalent amount of emissions is quite flawed. Here's just a few ways:
110
Zoe Avison @zoeavison.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
Approving the field wouldn't save the UK oil and gas industry which has been in steep decline for years. Enforcing decommissioning obligations is a much bigger opportunity for jobs, currently being missed
