My main sadness with Dolly passing is there aren't a lot of white celebrities of any stripe or age who understand what good can be achieved with the whole deal the way she did. Especially not southern-coded ones. So it's not just that she's gone, it's the hole her absence leaves behind.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.
