The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person. The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person. People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives. And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

There is so much in the news cycle these days that the complete dismantling of the Forest Service -- so *our* forests can be auctioned off to Big TImber -- is unfortunately getting little air play. But if this happens, US landscapes may be almost unrecognizable in a decade, and never coming back. 🌍

From Joe Posnasnki. Seems timely, for various reasons.
One day after the great Negro Leagues player, manager and spokesman Buck O’Neil died, there was an enormous bouquet of flowers sent to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Nobody knew where they had come from. And then, word got out: It was Ichiro. Understand, Ichiro had never met Buck O’Neil. He had never said a word about Buck O’Neil as far as anyone knew. But apparently, he had seen Buck around and had admired him. He felt a connection.

“Buck,” Ichiro later told people at the museum, “was a man of honor.”

Not long after Buck’s memorial, Ichiro came to the museum. He was mesmerized by the history there, particularly the section that showed a barnstorming team of Negro Leaguers coming to Japan decades before Babe Ruth’s famous tour in 1934. Ichiro was equally astonished to see a photo of a teenage Henry Aaron leaving home for the very first time, looking nervous but eager to face whatever pitches the world might throw at him.

Mostly, though, he was awed by all of these great ballplayers who kept going even though they were not invited. Ichiro didn’t say much. In truth, he hardly said anything at all. But all the while, he took it in, the photos mostly. He looked into the faces of these men who played ball, who hit home runs, who pitched strikeouts, who stole bases, who made diving catches and brilliant throws even while being treated as something less than human, even while being disregarded and ignored and dismissed.

And after the end of his tour, Ichiro quietly wrote the largest check any player has ever written to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

Wrote about that here:
These would-be dictators are rushing about severing alliances, sabotaging support, undermining cooperation within the nation and across the world. It seems to be in their nature to segregate, isolate, and disconnect. They cut the United States off from the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Treaty. They cut off the countless beneficiaries of USAID programs as they left USAID workers stranded across the world. They cut off crucial parts of the federal government with reckless disregard for how those parts contribute to the functioning of the whole--or maybe with enthusiasm for its malfunction, perhaps because they're bought into the rightwing idea that all this stuff is unnecessary, obstructive. It's certainly in the way of some of their ambitions.
Hannah Arendt described men like them well long before this era. A few days ago, the Arendt scholar Lyndsey Stonebridge called my attention to this passage from Arendt's On the Origins of Totalitarianism: “What binds these men together is a firm and sincere belief in omnipotence. Their moral cynicism, their belief that everything is permitted, rests on the solid conviction that everything is possible.…Yet they too are deceived, deceived by their impudent conceited idea that everything can be done and their contemptuous conviction that everything that exists is merely a temporary obstacle that superior organization will certainly destroy.”

I think about this map a lot. www.bloomberg.com/graphics/201...
This is a cartogram map of the United States depicting land use by different categories. The map distorts state shapes to represent proportional land usage. Key land use types include cow pasture/range (covering much of the central U.S.), private and federal timberland in the Pacific Northwest, corporate timberland in the Southeast, and urban housing/commercial areas in the Northeast. Other categories include agriculture (livestock feed, wheat exports, ethanol/biodiesel, cotton), protected lands (national parks, federal wilderness, state parks), and infrastructure (railroads, airports, highways). Additional specialized land uses include wildfires, golf courses, Christmas tree farms, and maple syrup production.
