My (belated) entry for Mathober day 4: Linear Recurrences! I was excited about this theme because it lets me share one of my favorite combinatorial puzzles, originating from my high school band class. #mathober #mathober2026 epiplexis.xyz/misc/mathobe...

6 hours later I have discovered that the following are not equivalent in Next.js static pre-render In this scenario, components.tsx contains a `createContext()` call, which breaks server rendering. Normally adding "use client" at the top fixes this, or doing lazy(() => import())

The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) statement on OpenAI’s October 6 release of mathematical documents just dropped! www.ahmath.org/statements
AHM Statement on OpenAI’s October 6 Release of Mathematical Documents

Yesterday, on October 6th, 2026, OpenAI – which is currently defending lawsuits against accusations of illegal plagiarism, copyright infringement, and trademark dilution – released a repository of manuscripts purporting to contain solutions to a number of high-profile problems in mathematics.

Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done. The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, from whom OpenAI has claimed to derive its legitimacy, opened their initial advisory statement by saying that frontier AI corporations should not test advanced mathematical problems on internal models. In ignoring the central premise of the Advisory Group’s position, OpenAI has indicated total disregard for the norms of scientific research — norms that guarantee that mathematics remains trustworthy, ethically researched, and in the public interest.

Mathematicians have a particular vision of progress that is informed by history and field-specific considerations. We reject OpenAI's assertion that this release advances our subject, and we urge mathematicians and the public to view the value of this publication model with due skepticism.

Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power. We urge mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and to return to a vision of science that centers human understanding.

I don't get how people are out here vibe-coding entire businesses when half the time I sit down to code my app stopped working overnight because of bugs in 3rd party dependencies (e.g. CloudFlare vs Vite) yes I have tried having agents debug this, they spin their wheels for 3 hours and get nowhere

A lot of AI/math discourse has a kind of sitcom-y view of mathematics, as if every open problem is a profound breakthrough Many open problems are there bc the author was exhausted and wanted to get the dang paper on arxiv already; or to leave low-hanging fruit for young people

Title: Prime ideals in the Burnside Tambara functor

Abstract: The Burnside Tambara functor is the analogue of the integers in equivariant algebra, and it appears as the zeroth equivariant stable stem. In this talk, we will describe how to leverage recent advances in the commutative algebra of Tambara functors to compute all the prime Tambara ideals of the Burnside Tambara functor for any finite group G. This talk is based on joint work with David Chan, Sam Ginnett, David Mehrle, J.D. Quigley, Ben Spitz, and Danika Van Niel.

Title: C-motivic periodic self-maps

Abstract: The stable motivic homotopy category is filled with interesting periodic phenomena. There are many periodicities which are motivic analogues of those found throughout chromatic homotopy theory, which we call topological. There are also new periodicities which are less understood, which we call exotic. I will discuss work in progress in studying the interaction between topological and exotic periodicities in C-motivic homotopy theory. The primary method for studying these periodicities will be through explicit periodic self-maps of finite spectra.

Code sample showing use of effect-paths module. process.cwd now returns an AbsoluteDir, and path.joining an AbsoluteDir with a RelativeFile gives an AbsoluteFile. The full example is available as plain text on the NPM package page.

Mathematicians are currently being instrumentalised in a large scale advertising campaign by AI companies competing for market monopoly. Public grant money is being paid to companies which then receive free advertising from us, often while showing little regard for our research priorities. More seriously, as part of this advertising campaign, some companies are pushing misinformation about the goals of mathematical research. This misinformation has the real potential to influence government funding decisions in a way that funnels money away from scientific goals, and towards private interests.
This advertising campaign has more serious collateral damage. Mathematics depends on a human research ecosystem which continually generates new problems and sustains the community capable of recognising and pursuing them. Human generated research problems are a scarce and essential part of this mathematical ecosystem. Conceptually incoherent and empirically unsupported rhetoric portraying mathematicians as replaceable threatens a pipeline of early career researchers already in precarious employment conditions. Damaging either undermines the infrastructure on which future mathematical progress depends.
While the author *does* want to be transparent about the use of computer assistance in the preparation of the current manuscript, he does not want to participate in this advertising campaign and contribute to this destruction of the commons. As such, the model and company name will remain absent from this manuscript, but are available upon request.

First use of LLMs I've seen in my field!
Tool and computational resource disclosure. Some of the results in Sections 5 and 6 were discovered with the help of computer assistance, specifically ChatGPT/Codex/Claude. The main results (in particular, Theorem 5.60) were originally discovered without computer assistance, but computer assistance helped us discover some of the general structural results about δ-˜Cartier rings. Moreover, discussions with ChatGPT helped us simplify, correct, and streamline a number of arguments throughout the paper, and in particular in Sections 5 and 6.
We used these tools (and GitHub Copilot) for proofreading and editing the manuscript, as well as for directly drafting pieces of proofs in a few cases (with human guidance) in Sections 5 and 6. We have edited, reviewed, and verified all the content generated by these tools to ensure its accuracy.
