mom's dug up the old sewing machine to fix something of hers, and i remembered i wanted to make a couple old tshirts sleeveless & sew zippers into pillowcases. went on to look for some tips online. i am now stuck in pinterest hell.

This is NOT about preservation. They are only doing this to harvest pre 2020's books to use for more training data. They have chosen this method that DESTROYS the book on purpose, because it is faster and cheaper. They know time is limited before society and the bubble catches up with them.

i know it's different in different countries, but we here do have legal "personal use", including making a digital copy (as long as it's for personal use & you don't distribute/sell it it's ok). i don't think a non-personal ai model falls into that tho. also, are *all* book scans fair use now then?

I hate that they're destroying books to do this. But I also hate that this is implicitly arguing for an expansion of copyright and basically to make books into another thing you're renting a license from the owner for. Books with an EULA. It's already bad enough that we do that with software!

I know Calvin’s dad is already having a moment, but every terrible “outsource precious and fleeting moments with your children to tech so that you can spend more time on your work” pitch makes me think of that one strip I never really cared about as a kid, but care a lot about as an adult.

The Calvin and Hobbes strip where Calvin asks his dad to come play in the snow with him. His dad initially says no, because he has to work. Then, angry at himself, his Dad goes out to build a snowman with Calvin. As the Dad works into the night to make up for it, we see Calvin’s mum lifting him up to give one of the few, if only, kisses he ever gives his dad in the Calvin and Hobbes run. His dad is content. It’s a textless comic, and it’s lovely.

My first #Cthulhu sculpture, created in 1988 while I was still doing my mandatory military service. Only ten centimeters tall, it has a single red stone—maybe a ruby—in place of the left eye.

remembered how painful was watching that one Renfield film right after the old Dracula one (Cageacula aside ― he was entertaining) Shadow Of The Vampire right after the Nosferatu film was a much better experience, even tho the reenacted scenes weren't as good.
