Interested in understanding how the genome architecture is regulated by the Smc complex and its additional regulation partners, and also the evolutionary diversities of the complex.

Excited to share our new paper out today in @science.org 🎉 We show that HGT via natural competence drives diversification of chromosomal integrons in V. cholerae 🤩 Below a 🧵 on key findings incl. background on natural competence in V. cholerae 1/ #microsky #phagesky www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

I’m very pleased to share our work looking at what controls condensin II cell-cycle dependant activity; a great collaboration with @eugenekimlab.bsky.social, @damlatetiker.bsky.social, Kyle Muir and Kumiko Samejima www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Structure and activation mechanism of a Lamassu phage and plasmid defense system
Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, Published online: 14 October 2025; doi:10.1038/s41594-025-01677-4Li et al. show that a Lamassu defense system protects bacteria from phage infection by activating a lethal tetrameric DNA-cutting enzyme. In the absence of phages, a protein clamp holds the enzyme as an inactive monomer, preventing self-damage.

And also the bacterial telomere protection paper by Maya, Nicolas, & Ania is out: doi.org/10.1038/s443... Great experience with @reviewcommons.org & @embojournal.org Feels just right to have the manuscript reviewed without having to target a specific journal from the start.

Yet another preprint from the lab—this one is personal. During my PhD, I ended up working on the cohesin SMC hinge, showing its role in sister chromatid cohesion and proposing it as a DNA entry gate in the SMC ring. But the details have remained mysterious and controversial.

Very pleased to share our new story on SMC complexes, a great team effort from @roisnehamelinf.bsky.social, @taschner.bsky.social in the GruberLab and James of @dnatopologylab.bsky.social We find that SMC hinge domains are ssDNA gates to facilitate obstacle bypass during DNA loop extrusion!

Glad to share our new preprint! Structure of the recently discovered anti-phage defense system Lamassu, which also belongs to the Smc family (cohesin, condensin, RM etc). Our study reveals how Lamassu stays sequestered and activated after phage infection. So what else can Smc do ;D?
