I never do Arena Directs, but I tried one today after scrubbing out of a Sealed RCQ yesterday. And I won a box *for the very first time ever* from one of these things! Ajani is a messed up card, but what if you could gamble for it twice and also get it back from the yard? @fireshoes.bsky.social

I've been getting more into pinball over the past year, and I'm pretty convinced that pinball games are an entire metaphor about the artistic merits of commercialized video games.

I feel that certain forms of art are relatively insultated from the threat of AI. It will create a bifurcated market, where people who engage with art primarily as a distraction will bow to the machine, whereas people that use art for its emotional value will pay a premium for human made stuff.

Brandon @yanguskhan.bsky.social · 11/09/2026

The real trick to this though is how basically every game component comes with some kind of friction cost. Even all these soul-less open-world games with crafting systems, etc.. They desperately try to sand down the friction around the edges, but then they've still got all this AAA bloat anyway.

010

Brandon @yanguskhan.bsky.social · 11/09/2026

Really though this is just one aspect of my grand unifying theory about video games, which simply boils down to: video games are about friction between the player and the game designers. Anything that introduces elements of Weird Friction is important

Fuck I'm pretty sure I'd argue that "stiff combat" also applies to fighting games and that's why so many old heads still love Super Turbo. By today's standards ST, demands nearly frame-perfect execution at highest levels, and IMO that lack of a long input frame buffer is one aspect of "stiff combat"

010

Brandon @yanguskhan.bsky.social · 09/09/2026

Man I wanna write a whole essay now about stiff combat and how much it rules. Secret of Mana, Ocarina of Time, Demon's Souls, King's Field, even Devil May Cry 1 was relatively stiff compared to what that series became.

130

Brandon @yanguskhan.bsky.social · 09/09/2026

Another reaction was: goddamn I teared up when Aonuma walked out into Hyrule Field for the first time. Pure nostalgia experience. Literally took me back to playing and replaying it all the damn time as a kid.

100

Brandon @yanguskhan.bsky.social · 09/09/2026

I'm mulling over some thoughts I've having from the OoT Remake Direct, but one piece of them is: I really love stiff combat in 3D action games, and that was why Demon's Souls was so compelling to me in 2009.
