There was one night this week where I stayed up very late playing hours of Star Wars Galactic Racer then immediately went to bed, and I swear my dreams went by at 300km/h. Incredible videogame! Maybe Star Wars is good again

I chatted to a boss design consultant about a boss archetype staple that everyone recognises but never had a widely-agreed name.

Devolver Digital is a private company again, following a shareholder vote that saw 90% in favour of delisting from the London Stock Exchange. Devolver proposed the privitisation in August, saying its business was incompatible with the "increased pressure to deliver short-term market expectations."

The "high chair boss" has been an archetype since the early God of War days. But can an old boss learn new tricks? @dominguezf.bsky.social talks to a boss fight design consultant to find out whether there’s any novelty left in the format (and to see what she thought of Wolverine's Sentinel fight).

I thought this was just beautiful. Kurt Vonnegut takes a walk to mail a letter:
She calls out, “Where are you going?” And I say, “I am going out to get an envelope.” And she says, “Well, you’re not a poor man. Why don’t you buy a thousand envelopes? They’ll deliver them, and you can put them in a closet.” And I say, “Hush.”

I go next to the postal convenience center down the block at the corner of 47th Street and Second Avenue. The woman behind the counter says, “Thirty-nine cents for a stamp.” I say, “I only brought thirty-seven. When did that change?” She looked at me a long time. “Thirty-seven isn’t enough.” “Well that oughta be enough for one envelope,” I said. The line was getting longer.

The lady moved her hand into her coat. I knew this routine. I backflipped behind the man behind me in line, wrapping my elbow around his throat as I landed. By the time the stamp seller had unloaded her clip, I had full cover. The gentleman’s body dropped to the floor, six holes smoking. The package he was carrying fell to the floor with a heavy clunk. Whatever was in there, it would do.

I rolled my foot over the cardboard and did a “flick up” as they call it in soccer. I bounced the package once or twice on the back of my foot as the mail lady reloaded, then I launched it high and spun 360 to deliver my patented “Rising Phoenix kick”. The package caught fire as it shattered through the protective plexiglass window and struck the woman’s head with all the force and hatred I had learned to channel in my grueling tutelage under five fallen Wudang masters in my youth. The lady’s body exploded off of her bones, leaving just a blackened skeleton spinning in her office chair. “So it goes,” I said, but no one laughed. I guess they weren’t big readers.

And I go home. And I have had one hell of a good time.

We are dancing animals. How beautiful it is to get up and go out and do something. We are here on Earth to fart around. Don’t let anybody tell you any different.

Weird situation for console release of Mewgenics in Australia. The game should be out, but it's unavailable on the eShop/PS Store. Ed McMillen says it's on 'hold' due to rating stuff. The Classification Board told me it's been rated M (Violence, Mature Themes, Drug References, Coarse Language). 🤷
Tweet from Edmund MicMillen: "ATTN: ASU and NZ players of Mewgenics! The game is currently on hold due to its "rating", we are obviously pushing for its release but they have rejected games with similar tones in the past (South Park / Hotline Miami / Saints row etc)... stay tuned."

Some quick thoughts on Duskbloods, Marathon, and disposable multiplayer loops! Oh and fuck Zork.
But my weary back did immediately arch up at the realisation that to truly get into it, I’d have to learn yet another multiplayer loop. Another set of proper nouns. Another round of wrangling time zones and schedules to gather the lads. Another fifty hours on a game we’d likely forget about in twelve months. Glib thinking? Probably. But this mercenary approach to time management has become an essential defence mechanism in a market openly trying to corral us into forever game experiences.

somehow, I'm sitting down at Rockstar North, about to watch co-studio head Rob Nelson play through 30 minutes of the game. It's a privilege only a handful of people have been granted. Holy shit. HOLY SHIT.

Half an hour later, it's crystal clear that this game will occupy every waking minute of my existence when it finally arrives this November. If you need to know just one thing about GTA 6, it's that you're going to spend so much time in it
