An analysis of 21 years of monitoring across Europe now demonstrates that climate warming is increasingly displacing species from mountaintops, especially those that are close to their lower range margins. Learn more this week in Science: scim.ag/4zYxuUS
Alpine vegetation, such as this grassland in the Bernese Alps, Switzerland, is changing under the impact of decades of warming. Species richness has increased in many locations owing to plants migrating upward. However, analysis of 21 years of monitoring across Europe now demonstrates that climate warming is also increasingly displacing species from mountaintops, especially those that are close to their lower range margins.

Exhilarated to share a 2nd @science.org cover article this month from our lab @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social! A collaboration with US & Mexico colleagues on the role of a Mexican biogeographic holding pen in shaping the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI)(1/11) www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Cover of Science magazine for July 30, 2026. Caption from Science reads: A three-dimensional rendering shows the land bridge connection between North and South America. Research on the fossil record of mammals in Mexico suggests that the geographic region acted as a biodiversity “holding pen” for 10 million years, buffering the pace of both northward and southward movements of mammal species leading up to the Great American Biotic Interchange.

Ancient pine trees growing in eastern Spain have quietly recorded more than five centuries of Mediterranean weather. Analysis of tree rings clearly shows that todays storms and droughts are becoming more intense and more frequent than almost anything the region has experienced since the early 1500s.

Online now: Chronic anthropogenic disturbances reorganize tropical dry forest biota
dlvr.it
Chronic anthropogenic disturbances reorganize tropical dry forest biota
Chronic anthropogenic disturbances (i.e., the continuous removal of small portions of forest biomass) are pervasive in tropical dry forest. We demonstrate that these disturbances trigger consistent changes across multiple ecological levels, from population to ecosystem levels. Plant populations exhibit contrasting responses, with some species being negatively affected, whereas others persist or even thrive. Communities become species-poor and dominated by disturbance-adapted plant and animal species. At the ecosystem level, chronic disturbances reduce forest biomass, soil nutrient concentration/stocks, productivity, and the provision of ecosystem services. Collectively, these responses drive dry forests across four potential transitions: arrested succession, forest–shrub conversion, novel ecosystems, and desertification.
