Trees don’t always shift upslope with increasing temperature. Those that are more climate sensitive do but other species are moving downslope. Hydraulic traits can help determine which direction species will shift. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

This is an important point. While some hard limits (cannot be overcome by any means) to adaptation might be identified through biophysical research, identifying most hard limits and all soft limits (we hit because we choose not to do things that are needed) requires actually trying to adapt.

Now in summer, we can confirm that a large part of the beech (Fagus sylvatica) forests that burned in low‑intensity understory fires have died. This constitutes a clear case of a low‑intensity, high‑severity fire (I had expected bsky.app/profile/jgpa...) 🧪🌍🔥🌳🍁🪴 wildfires Picos de Europa, N Spain

No doubt these times have broadly, though not completely, sped up the ecology of ecosystem processes. A result like this, I suspect, if conducted in prior centuries, might be expected in a kind of pulsed or episodic dynamic. Global change, in a way, makes this somewhat moot, though if synced…🤯
