Pro tip for writers: A very bad first draft is not a failure - it’s a great start, Congratulations! You can’t revise a blank page, but you can shape a bad one into something really great

Just finished Becoming Martian by @scottsolomon.bsky.social from Rice University A wonderful, deep, and thoughtful exploration of how generations on Mars might change us. Fascinating connections throughout. I learned so much, and it left me with plenty to think about! Must read!!

English is a really hard language for science. Spelling often makes little sense, rules have so many exceptions, and even common phrases can be confusing. But AI can help non-native speakers spend less time fixing their English and more time sharing their science...

Some tips on how to use AI for scientific writing that I am going to give to my students. Comments are welcome!!! 🌐🧪
Encouraged
uses include refining questions and hypotheses, generating search terms,
brainstorming, outlining, proposing titles, improving grammar and clarity,
reducing redundancy, and requesting formative critique.

Conditional uses include suggesting papers,
summarizing sources, translating or paraphrasing, generating prose from
verified evidence, and proposing code or statistical steps; these require
direct inspection of sources or data, testing, revision, and disclosure.

 Unacceptable
uses include inventing or altering data, methods, results, statistics,
quotations, or citations; citing AI as scientific evidence; using unchecked
sources; outsourcing interpretations or conclusions; submitting text the
student cannot explain; concealing use; or uploading confidential or
third-party unpublished material.

Good papers often have an hourglass shape. The Introduction moves from the big picture to a specific question. Methods and Results stay focused. The Discussion expands from the findings to their broader meaning.

Before writing an introduction, make a one-line roadmap for each paragraph. Then read only those lines. Do they form a logical argument? If not, reorganize the roadmap before polishing the text. 🌐🧪

The first draft has one job: to exist. It can be messy, incomplete, repetitive, and full of notes to yourself. Once the ideas are on the page, you can improve them. Perfection belongs to revision, not drafting. #AcademicWriting 🧪🗺️

Your results may have taken years, but your title gets only seconds. Spend more time per word on the title than on any other part of the manuscript, followed by the abstract. Most readers will never reach the full paper. #SciComm 🧪🗺️

Peer review can feel like a three-level boss battle: Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editor, then reviewers. Each asks something different: Does it fit? Does it advance the field? Is the science rigorous? Make the value of your paper visible at every level.

Choosing a journal should not be a spin of the wheel. Before submitting, ask: Is the audience right? Does the paper fit the scope? What is Plan B? A strong paper can still be rejected because it landed at the wrong journal. #AcademicPublishing 🌐🧪

Writing is important, but without a deadline it rarely becomes urgent. Set a realistic date, put it on the calendar, and tell a collaborator or advisor. A shared deadline is much harder to ignore than a private intention. 🧪🌐

This! If you like Martin's book, review it on Amazon. If you like someone else's book, review it on Amazon. Doesn't matter if you have (quite reasonable) objections to the dominance of Amazon - review Martin's book anyway. (And mine. There, you knew I'd get to that. But do Martin's first.)

People often ask me what they can do to help support my book. The simplest answer: leave a review on Amazon! :) Reviews really help the book become more visible and reach new readers. So, if you’ve read it and enjoyed it, I’d be very grateful if you took a minute to leave a review. Thank you!

Sadly, downloading PDFs is not reading. But it *feels* like progress. The trick is to spend time actually reading and taking notes—discover the gaps then downloading some more—until you think you know the story. Then start your draft MS and discover more gaps. Rinse and repeat. You’ll get there.
