Continental-scale study looking into four species (roe deer, red deer, moose, European bison)- using GPS tracking data from >3000 individuals and a 35-year disturbance history @corneliussenf.bsky.social - main finding: disturbances (both natural and anthropogenic) improve for decades 👇
Graph showing how habitat suitability increases after disturbances - and after some time, as forests grow back, decreases again.

The future of Europe’s forest disturbance regimes– a thread. Tl, dr: Disturbances from wildfire, bark beetles & wind will continue to increase in the coming decades. Under unabated climate change disturbances could more than double by 2100. New paper out in @science.org doi.org/10.1126/scie...

Natural disturbances are often invoked as an argument against creating new forest reserves. But are reserves more affected by disturbances than managed forests? For C Europe the answer is no, in fact reserves have lower disturbance rate & severity than managed forests! doi.org/10.1111/1365...

📣PNAS piece led by @philrufin.bsky.social: commercial very-high-resolution EO data is needed for monitoring SDG 2 indicators in smallholder landscapes but costs are prohibitive. A call for open access for sustainability-centered research: doi.org/10.1073/pnas... @humboldtuni.bsky.social
A drone capture of a smallholder farming landscape. Overlaid are squares of the size of typical optical satellite missions. Openly accessible data (e.g. Landsat or Sentinel-2) is often not sufficient to capture the landscape complexity in full detail, for example when trying to delineate individual fields. Here, one Landsat pixel contains fractions of multiple fields. Commercial data come at higher spatial resolution, offering potential to discriminate indivudual landscape components.

Another example of how our European forest disturbance data can be integrated in conservation research: colleagues from @au.dk (Aarhus Uni) mapped high conservation value forests in Denmark and analysed the rates of disturbance therein (very low!): conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Example of disturbance (including management) detected since 2015 for the Mols Bjerge Region in Eastern Jutland based on the disturbance masks provided by Senf and Seidl (2021). The two top panels show an orthophoto from summer 2014 without annotation (top-left) and with the projected forest conservation value superimposed (top-right). Light green indicates a potential high conservation value and rust indicates a potentially low conservation value. The bottom panels show an orthophoto from spring 2021 without annotations (bottom-left) and with annotation of the areas detected as disturbed between 2015 and 2020 (bottom-right). Disturbed polygons are indicated in purple. Orthophotos provided by Styrelsen for Dataforsyning og Effektivisering (2022).Predicted locations of high and low conservation value forests across the whole of Denmark (map on left) and for the Frederiksdal region (panels on right)—not accounting for disturbance. The upper right panel depicts an orthophoto of the Frederiksdal region (summer 2014); the lower right panel shows the same orthophoto with the forest conservation value projections overlain on top. Orthophotos provided by Styrelsen for Dataforsyning og Effektivisering (2022).

In a new paper, Anne Graser from University of Göttingen @consbiogoe.bsky.social used our European disturbance map to understand disturbance and post-disturbance management impact on bird communities in Central Europe: doi.org/10.1111/1365...
Predicted density of 37 bird species modelled via community distance sampling for years since disturbance. Red-listed species are shown with a red-bordered header box. Coloured header boxes indicated the habitat affiliation: Green: forest, yellow: farmland/open land, white: several. Species for which the posterior checks did not indicate that the models are reliable are labelled n.r. (not reliable).
