The Hollow Earth Theory proposes the earth's core is hollow, or contains another world. This was first depicted in the satirical sci-fi/fantasy novel Niels Klim's Underground Travels (1741), in which a man discovers a smaller planet, called Nazar, inside earth while cave-diving. #WyrdWednesday

#WyrdWednesday A drawing from Daemon by Stephen and Chip Fabian. A graphic series about a strange cosmic voyage that was published in five issues of Fantastic from July 1979 to July 1980. I have an image from a 1990s art book that's not so tinted by time, but I like this one from the magazine.
A drawing from Daemon, Part 5 (Fantastic, July 1980). Three men are paddling a boat. They have mostly shaven skulls with a ridge of long hair and have adornments on their arms and necks. There are two very close planets in the starry night sky, one much larger than the other.

#FairyTaleTuesday Wyrd is a noun formed from the Old English weorþan (to come to pass, to become). Adjectival use of wyrd developed in the 15th century, in the sense 'having the power to control destiny', originally in the name of the Weird Sisters (the Fates). Source: Wikipedia

Hm. Even with every handkerchief set and a very favourable wind, she wouldn't make more than 14 knots against the "Nixie's" max of 17... and the broadside weight of a Unité-class corvette or HM jackass frigate of about 200 pounds wouldn't do too much damage... a school of very angry orcas maybe?

Illustration by Anton Pieck 'The Wonderful Adventures of Nils' by Selma Lagerlöf #OwlishMonday
Illustration, 1940. Night time, a starry sky. A tiny, elf-like man sits under hanging red berries. There is an apple on the ground with a slice taken out of it, almost as big as he is, resembling a giant pumpkin. A large barn owl sits beside him, towering over him. In the distance there is a cottage with lit windows.

As in "About, about, in reel and rout The death-fires danced at night; The water, like a witch's oils, Burnt green, and blue and white." ... yes, I can why... but besides that, Overend's naval imagery is clearly taken from the days of Nelson's navy.
