This is the only drawing (1868) made by John Everett Millais for an uncompleted project with Alfred Lord Tennyson and the composer Sir Arthur Sullivan to combine poetry, painting and music - 'The Songs of the Wrens,' by Tennyson and Sullivan came out of this idea.

Some gates make you wary of climbing over or opening them. You have this weird sense that crossing their threshold will deliver you somewhere else. Faery or some parallel dimension that is simultaneously familiar yet alien. My danger radar is weak, but not that weak. – #MattAdams

Some trees are more than hedge anchors, landmarks in the lane. They stand out as guardians, green monarchs of their kingdoms. At twilight there is often a sense of them wishing to speak of what they have seen – whether to give a blessing or warning is hard to tell. – #DAKilroy, 1982

Here at the edge of the salt marsh, all magic is brined. Clouds race the sky for the delight of being augury.
