What can the world learn from a century of Dutch experience connecting bikes and trains? Quite a lot, as it turns out. If we want to understand the future potential of bike-train intermodality to make cities more liveable, accessible and prosperous, we must first understand its past: bit.ly/4hUIJoN

Removing parking minimums is not the end of parking policy. Busy places still need loading, accessible spaces, permits, pricing + curb management. The goal isn't “no rules.” It is less mandate and better management.
Graphic advocating fewer parking mandates and smarter curb management: bold headline "Less mandate. Better management." over a busy shopping-center parking lot; left panel reads "Old approach — Require more parking." right panel lists "Better questions" about demand, access, curb use, and existing

Safety alone isn't enough to get more women cycling. Cities must start building cohesive networks connecting the myriad places women need to go. This means looking beyond “Can women cycle safely here?” and asking: “Can women use this network to live their lives?” LISTEN: www.dw.com/en/why-arent...

The curb is not leftover space. It is some of the most valuable public land in a city. Parking, loading, buses, bike lanes, scooters, trees, deliveries, accessible spaces, and public life are all competing for the same curb. Parking reform is how cities start managing that space honestly.

Tianjin's dockless bike-sharing scheme includes bicycles equipped with a child seat, turning the daily school run or grocery trip into a journey made together. It's a family-friendly feature that recognises a fundamental reality: mobility systems should work for caregivers and not just breadwinners.

There’s a link to a summary article at the bottom of the thread. I especially liked this key conclusion: “Cycling is not a transport project; it is a city-building strategy.” So, for cities in the USA, a critical first step would be to abandon laissez-faire and define a vision for the future.

Ironically, ebikes make this easier because it costs less in effort to slow down and get back up to speed when the rider is the pedestrian. I’m not sure how many folks follow the practice, but it’s certainly possible.

Why building safe routes to walk and cycle is really good value for money. [From my newsletter: diagramclub.substack.com ]
Black-and-white cartoon titled “Building safe routes to walk and cycle is really good value for money.”
- A children’s drawings of traveling to school suggest they want to walk, but “they can’t because it isn’t safe.”
- An “active travel money machine” illustration states that every £1 invested returns £5.50.
- Benefits include physical activity, thriving high streets, reduced loneliness and improved mental health, road safety, and less pollution. - A section showing different transport options, bus, bicycle, walking, helicopter, and ca, around a person, with label “people need a choice.”
- A pie labeled “roads budget” and a small slice labeled “active travel” illustrate the message that “a fair share goes a long way.”

Modernizing Ontario's Framework for Power-Assisted Bicycles (E-Bikes) www.regulatoryregistry.gov.on.ca/proposal/539... h/t @thebikinglawyer.bsky.social Cc: @mbonsma.bsky.social @bikesky.social #BikeTO
Comment on this proposal
41 DAY(S) LEFT TO COMMENT
Modernizing Ontario's Framework for Power-Assisted Bicycles (E-Bikes)
Summary of the proposal
Since the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) was amended to recognize power-assisted bicycles (also known as electric bikes or e-bikes) as a permanent vehicle type, the range and capabilities of electric vehicles have evolved significantly.

In response, amendments related to e-bikes were included within the Safer Roads and Communities Act, 2024 (SRCA). These amendments expand regulation-making powers under the HTA to enable the province to update and refine the definition of e-bikes, including the ability to establish distinct classes of e-bikes with tailored operator, vehicle and safety requirements.

The key benefits of an updated regulatory framework for e-bikes include:
• Improving safety by enabling requirements that reflect differences in e-bike speed, weight, and design,
• Providing greater clarity for riders, industry, municipalities, and enforcement,
• Modernizing the framework to keep pace with a rapidly evolving e-bike market; and
• Supporting the safe use of e-bikes as a sustainable transportation option.

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is seeking feedback on a proposed updated regulatory framework for e-bikes. Please refer to the attached summary for additional details on the proposal.

We appreciate your input and invite you to submit comments for MTO's consideration.

Understanding America's traffic safety failures requires grasping two basic facts: - Americans drive a LOT vis a vis other nations due to sprawl, cheap gas, poor transit/trains, etc (which is why deaths per capita is the right metric, below) - A mile of US driving is *still* unusually deadly
bloomberg.com
The US Is Counting Traffic Deaths Wrong
By emphasizing the number of people killed per mile rather than deaths per capita, traffic safety groups risk normalizing the factors that make American roads so deadly.
