I spoke to @kattenbarge.bsky.social about the media coverage of “inconsistencies” in Jane Doe’s case, as well as my own experience with USA Today misusing my words in a story smearing her. As always, Kat understands the way victims are punished from coming forward. This article is a must-read.

Debunking the smear campaign against the Cornell Jane Doe
Authorities, media outlets, and pundits are lying about this woman. But only her credibility is getting judged.

I always ask if people think hearing a digital piano programmed to play a concerto is the same as hearing my dad — who’s been playing for 79 years and still practices hours a day — do it. And funnily enough no one has ever agreed that it is.

When #MeToo first broke in 2017, I realized how many times I had been harassed, assaulted, or just had boundaries crossed by men while reading all the detailed reports and features for my fellowship at CJR. It was incredibly painful. And I have to avoid thinking about it too much or I can't work.

I'm glad we're still talking about Cornell. I'm glad we aren't letting it go. I even started to wonder if this would keep growing, become the next iteration of #MeToo. But then you see questions like these and you wonder if we've made any progress at all.

Written after the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings and yet... "many guys hold the old-fashioned view that sex is something you do with someone you love. It’s just that the people they love are their bros." A good but gutting read.

Good and gutting. (No, really, it is very good—you should read it) David Perry, UMN student advisor, on what the university is for and how deeply the planned budget cuts will mess with that www.startribune.com/umn-cuts-sta...
And mostly, it’s worked out for the best. Even if we just assess for dollar value, a 2025 analysis found that for every $1 invested in the U, the state reaped $16.75. In other words, every Minnesotan benefits from our robust systems of public higher education.
It’s been striking to me that while conversation about the budget inside the U has been substantial, I haven’t yet seen Minnesotan politicians addressing these potential cuts as a crisis. Part of that is because public universities like the U have made a trade-off, growing increasingly corporate and independent (despite publicly appointed regents) as public funding has collapsed. As a share of the budget, state funding has plummeted over the decades, falling to about 15%, compared to 39% in 1997. If that’s what you want, then fine. But did we ever have a public debate about whether that’s what Minnesotans actually want?
If you don’t want to more significantly fund the university, which bits are you eager to cut away? If it’s instruction and student services, here’s what happens.

either it is in principle possible to set up appropriate safeguards (in which case the "AI alignment" story is just as much about who gets to set them up and enforce them as it is about the content of the safeguards) or it is not (in which case we should be talking about transnational moratoria)

There’s more to be said about the relationship between Pinker-style stardom and the state of academia. Not because academia is Woke, but because star systems loosen rigor at the top while solid scholarship becomes a dead end lower down. Shoddy celebrities and broke PhDs proceed from the same machine

But the actual problem is not who gets the golden ticket this year, but rather why a socially vital sector (do we not think knowledge, about society and about nature, is valuable?) has been eviscerated to the point where a steady job teaching and doing research is a golden ticket in the first place.
