Supermarket pet hates: 1. People who just *stop* for no reason. 2. People who talk to their friends in the middle of an aisle. 3. People who feel the need to individually examine each item on a shelf. 4. People who say 'excuse me' to get past you and then block the aisle.

Most of the words I read are domesticated and raised in books and articles, but occasionally I find words out in the wild. These are my favourites.

A yellow wall, on which somebody has graffitied "DIRTY EGG SCENTED WRONG PERSON"

A large wall alongside a canal, on which someone has daubed in letters several feet high "LOVE ME"

A handmade sign on the side of a country lane on which someone has scrawled "PLEASE BEEP TO TRY MOVE THE STUPID BIRDS OUT THE WAY THANK YOU"

A brick wall on which somebody has spray painted in black letters the word "Teeth". There is no other context, perhaps it forms part of a territorial turf war between dentists?

I've just been reading about Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck, the young pretenders to the Tudor throne. After his failed coup, Simnel was put to work in the Royal kitchens. Warbeck went on to greater success, forming The Flumps with his siblings Posie and Pootle.

Just had an endoscopy, which was as fun as you'd imagine. I enjoyed the Entonox, though and had a surreal conversation about Brutalist architecture with the gastroenterologist (I am wearing a Forton Services T shirt today). Not what you expect when you're off your head with a camera up your arse.

I've still got the eclipse glasses I bought at the time, unused. I didn't need them in the end: I bought a book and there was a blue pair included with it so I used those. Should've gone for the Devo look.

27 years ago today, around this time, I was in a field above the city of Reims in northern France drinking chilled Champagne having just seen the total eclipse of the sun. One of the friends I was with had done his homework and correctly predicted that the thin cloud would part over the high ground.
