A beautiful thing in academia is the chance to meet and learn from smart people across disciplines, and let conversations simmer, allowing ideas to emerge and take shape. This was a great piece to write with a great team. Thanks to @ctwittekind.bsky.social and Elizabeth Resor for leading the charge!

A new fight related to Good Cause is brewing: what does “demolish“ mean? The law lets a landlord evict a tenant by citing intent to demolish, but it’s an open question of whether an apartment renovation counts, or if the whole building must come down. www.thecity.nyc/2026/05/13/g...

‘Good Cause’ tenant protections enacted in 2024 left a big opening for property owners to not renew leases. But do apartment renovations count as demolition?

One sad thing I observe (including in myself) is that, due to AI use (and allowing light grammar checking) for ESLs, our voices and tones become homogeneous. How should we understand this shift from non-grammatically right sentences to a complete loss of voice?

this stuff is so jank
In an example they uncovered, a speaker said,
"He, the boy, was going to, l'm not sure exactly, take the umbrella."
But the transcription software added: "He took a big piece of a cross, a teeny, small piece... I'm sure he didn't have a terror knife so he killed a number of people."
A speaker in another recording described "two other girls and one lady." Whisper invented extra commentary on race, adding "two other girls and one lady, um, which were Black."
In a third transcription, Whisper invented a non-existent medication called "hyperactivated antibiotics."

I am also skeptical of “evidence-based policy.” The idea is often predicated on indifference to the reality that the production and use of evidence is endogenous to political processes. Evidence is important. But it is fundamentally political. So, whether & how it gets used is a matter of power.

Relevant reading on this. Asymmetries in spatial and social segregation do seem related to a lot of this discourse. "White people typically avoid black space, but black people are required to navigate the white space as a condition of their existence." 🔓paper: sociology.yale.edu/sites/defaul...
Academic article: "The White Space."

Abstract: Since the end of the Civil Rights Movement, large numbers of black people have made their way into settings previously occupied only by whites, though their reception has been mixed. Overwhelmingly white neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, restaurants, and other public spaces remain. Blacks perceive such settings as “the white space,” which they often consider to be informally “off limits” for people like them. Meanwhile, despite the growth of an enormous black middle class, many whites assume that the natural black space is that destitute and fearsome locality so commonly featured in the public media, including popular books, music and videos, and the TV news—the iconic ghetto. White people typically avoid black space, but black people are required to navigate the white space as a condition of their existence.
