Reimagining edtech
The key concepts and practices of reparations, sovereignty, care and democratisation are powerful resources to help imagine and build potential alternative futures of education. They also help foreground the fact that society and digital technologies are inseparable. Digital technologies are always socially produced – they are ‘sociodigital’, not simply digital.

Understanding technologies as sociodigital reminds us that they could always be designed differently, through the involvement of other social groups, and by foregrounding other sets of values. When it comes to developing new tools, platforms and visions of the future, these are predominantly led by the tech industry.

Taking a sociodigital approach allows us to propose new ways of thinking about the design and use of edtech in ways that are sensitive to issues of social justice, and to work towards building more socially just sociodigital futures of education.
