SAVE THE DATES! HUGE news everyone! We’re delighted to share that our popular Winter Conference event is returning in 2026!

Proudly sponsored by CHASE (AHRC), the third iteration of the MEMRN Winter Conference will take place from the 12th - 15th November at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. We’re so excited to finally reveal ‘Otherworlds’ as this year’s exciting conference theme.

Join us between the 12th & 15th in person and online for several joyful days of panels, social events, workshops, networking sessions, and adventures in our historic city. Arrival activities will take place on Thursday 12th November, with the following three days dedicated to the exploration and exchange of our community’s incredible academic knowledge.

If you’ve previously attended one of our events, you’ll know that this promises to be a brilliant time; full of supportive academic dialogue, socialising with like-minded peers, and plenty of laid-back fun too. Don’t just take our word for it, though - swipe to see what last year’s delegates thought!

Everyone is welcome: whether you’re a current researcher, a creative practitioner, working in heritage, or simply a huge history enthusiast - MEMRN is always proudly open to all.

This year’s Call for Papers will be available via the MEMRN website and on our social media from Tuesday 4th August. The deadline for submitting an abstract will be midnight on Friday 25th September.

Interested in the history of #OldEnglish scholarship? @emgallimore.bsky.social, Thijs Porck and I will be editing a volume on OE in the long 19th century; if you'd like to contribute a chapter, the deadline for abstracts is 1 Sept 2026, first full drafts due Sept 2027. Spread the word! #medievalsky
Call for Contributions
Dynamics of Old English Scholarship in the Long Nineteenth Century: Discoveries, Disputes and the Development of a Discipline
ed. Rachel A. Fletcher, Ellen Gallimore & Thijs Porck
The long nineteenth century (1786–1914) was a dynamic and transformative period for the scholarly study of Old English.
The legacies of nineteenth-century scholarship remain deeply embedded in the study of Old English today. As a result, contemporary scholars must engage not only with early medieval language and literature itself, but also with the intellectual and ideological lenses through which nineteenth-century scholars recovered, edited and interpreted this material.
We hope to bring together a peer-reviewed edited volume with papers on various aspects of the scholarly study of Old English in the long nineteenth century, with an additional focus on European continental
contributions in line with the ERC-project EMERGENCE (‘Early Medieval English in NineteenthCentury Europe’). Proposals for chapter contributions of c. 8000 words are welcome from scholars from all academic backgrounds. First drafts full drafts are due at the end of September 2027.
Possible topics/themes include but are not limited to:
- Discoveries of Old English texts
- Disputes about linguistic or literary interpretations of Old English
- Developments in the discipline of Old English studies
- Personal, religious, political and ideological motivations for the study of Old English
- Biographical contributions about scholars of Old English
- Scholarly correspondence on Old English matters
- Editing and printing of Old English texts
- Teaching of Old English
Please send an abstract (500 words) and short bio (150 words) to Rachel A. Fletcher
(r.a.fletcher@hum.leidenuniv.nl), Ellen Gallimore (ellen.gallimore@york.ac.uk) and Thijs Porck (m.h.porck@hum.leidenuniv.nl) before 1 September 2026.

Pleased to be quoted here. This is the first request for a conversation I've accepted from a journalist who emailed me abt AI bc the journalist, Kathryn Palmer, didn't approach me as a stenographer for industry but instead to provide visibility for a movement. We had a great substantive conversation
For academics and others who want to advance the Al-resistance movement, focusing on the right to refuse the technology and directing criticism toward tech companies offers the best path forward, said Sonja Drimmer, an associate professor of medieval art and architecture at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst who has written at length about resisting generative Al in education.
"Worries about plagiarism are distractions to pit teachers against students so that we forget that our actual opponents in this battle are profiteers and opportunists," she said. "The word 'inevitability' has long been used to defuse and deflate any kind of resistance or rejection to anything. It's important to ask who is promoting that narrative and why."
And while those and other questions about generative Al's ability to improve student outcomes remain largely unanswered, the higher education sector should take time to first question where the pressure to adopt the tools now is coming from, Drimmer added.
It's also why she believes the CCCC's resolution offers such an effective defense against that pressure.
"Urgency is meant to flood the mind of the customer so they can't take a pause to consider whether the thing that's being sold really needs to be bought," she said. "I see no need for urgency. I understand that the phrase 'But we're going to fall behind' can be very convincing. But no one is really asking, 'Fall behind what?''
