For our final September recommendation, we have to include "Teaching 'Beowulf': Practical Approaches," edited by Larry Swain and Ophelia Eryn Hostetter. Balancing both pedagogy and research, this is an invaluable volume for any instructor. Snag yours here --> wmich.edu/medievalpubl...
Cover of "Teaching 'Beowulf'."Text reading: "“Beowulf” is by far the most popular text of the medieval world taught in American classrooms, at both the high school and undergraduate levels. More students than ever before wrestle with Grendel in the darkness of Heorot or venture into the dragon’s barrow for gold and glory. This practical guide to teaching “Beowulf” in the twenty-first century combines scholarly research with pedagogical technique, imparting a picture of how the poem can be taught in contemporary American institutions."

How did writers in seventh-century Ireland use saints' narratives in political and ecclesiastical conflicts? Find out with this week's recommendation, "Hiberno-Latin Saint's 'Lives' in the Seventh Century: Writing Early Ireland" by John Higgins! See more here --> wmich.edu/medievalpubl...
Cover of "Hiberno-Latin Saints' 'Lives' in the Seventh Century."Text reading: "The authors of Irish saints’ Lives used the literary form of hagiography (Christian biography), miracle stories, and an elaborate rhetorical style to present the words and actions of their subjects. These Lives created a narrative of early Irish history that supported the political/ecclesiastical elites by showing that their power derived from the actions of their patron saints."

Coming soon from the Late Tudor and Stuart Drama Series: "The Edges of Early Modern English Drama: History, Performance, and the Scholarship of Lisa Hopkins" edited by Aidan Norrie and Matthew Steggle. Look for it this fall, or preorder your copy now! wmich.edu/medievalpubl...
Cover of "The Edges of Early Modern English Drama."Text reading: "Thanks to the pioneering work of Professor Lisa Hopkins, the field of early modern English drama is now much more attuned to the various edges, spaces, and intersections that characterise the dramatic output of the period...

This collection examines works by a range of dramatists—including Beaumont, Dekker, Fletcher, Heywood, Jonson, Lyly, Marlowe, Massinger, Middleton, Sampson, and Shakespeare—and demonstrates that paying close attention to the edges of these dramatic works reveals much about the conditions in which these texts were conceived, produced, and received."

Explore ideas of how the foreign becomes native, and how plants can be symbols of a far-reaching exchange with this week's recommendation: "The Edges of Christendom on the Early Modern Stage" by Lisa Hopkins! See more here: wmich.edu/medievalpubl...
Cover of "The Edge of Christendom on the Early Modern Stage".
Graphic reading: Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the edges of Europe were under pressure from the Ottoman Turks. This book explores how Shakespeare and his contemporaries represented places where Christians came up against Turks, including Malta, Tunis, Hungary, and Armenia... Edges of Christendom could be found in areas that were or had been pagan, such as Rome itself and the Danelaw, which once covered northern England; they could even be found in English homes and gardens, where imported foreign flowers and exotic new ingredients challenged the concept of what was native and natural.
