Probably the best thing about Strictly is back! "He dances with the urgency of the dribbling tap in a Nando’s toilet" Just perfect.

Can't believe after a decade of Tory Brexit nonsense, it's a Labour government that has got me so frustrated I'm writing emails to my MP. First time it was Starmer's vile immigration speech. Now it's me asking them to consider maybe doing something - anything - about the fascist mobs on the streets.

One of Magdalen's most legendary figures, Martin Routh was born #OnThisDay in 1755. He served as our President for 63 years, between 1791–1854. This daguerreotype of Routh was taken on his 99th birthday on 18 September 1854, making him one of the earliest born people to be photographed.
Black-and-white daguerreotype portrait of an elderly man leaning forward and looking down, displayed behind glass in a distressed yellow mat speckled with blue and a red velvet frame.

This is a truly remarkable development: A carbonized scroll, sealed since the eruption of #Vesuvius in 79 AD, has been virtually unwrapped and successfully deciphered in its entirety. What informations will the other carbonized scrolls reveal? What an exciting project! scrollprize.org/firstscroll

This is pretty scandalous I think. The local mayor ran an overtly anti-EWR campaign, got elected by a few hundred votes, then spent thousands of pounds on spurious studies challenging the railway, and has now admitted he has a financial interest because the chosen route cuts across his family land.

One of the infuriating things about this government is they seem to view the political landscape like the weather, rather than something they can influence and reshape with the vast powers at their disposal.

Given the constraints Sam identifies, as well as Burnham's background, I wonder if something dramatic on electoral reform and devolution will be top of the agenda. Low cost and quick implementation compared to many reforms, and it'd appeal to disgruntled left wing voters and wonkish centrists alike.

Putin’s aims for Ukraine are textbook genocidal. He says Ukraine doesn’t get to exist, that Ukrainian language & culture doesn’t exist. His actions - civilian massacres, occupation, executing people who have Ukrainian symbols, the child abductions - all genocidal

Apparently, in the first football match between England and Scotland in 1870, there wasn't a Scottish-born player on the pitch. Most had Scottish parents or grandparents, which seems fair enough. But they must have been desperate when they let a guy play just because his cousin had married a Scot.

Labour keeps talking about saving the high street without naming the real problem. Car dependency. You cannot fix town centres while planning everything around driving. The internet is permanent. Retail only survives where footfall is dense, local, frequent, and cheap to access.
