Heading back from a meeting just decided to share this little bit of 17th century science research for the novel: Phosphorous was discovered by a man who boiled 1500 litres of contaminated piss thinking the yellow colour meant it might have gold in it

Ghastly wars (Gaza, Ukraine) in your face, inflation, political instability. It’s very 70s coded, and we haven’t even got space hoppers or punk.

It's so sick that Yamaha makes both saxophones and motorcycles. If you were a cool guy in the 80s and needed equipment, Yamaha really had your back

RIP Jeffrey Archer, not a day goes by when I don't think about the judge in his 1987 libel case (which Archer "won" by doing a bunch of perjury) summing up for the jury by going "would a guilty man have such a hot wife". one of the most insane legal moments of all time

GW’s success is also fascinating because it’s both a high street business and a multinational one, though not in the way you’d expect, because it’s vertically integrated with local manufacturing. The lead belt around Nottingham is arguably the only modern British manufacturing success story.

Genuinely hard to think of a worse way to spend money. In the UK and France, we regularly have national races to run g7 nuclear armed countries where the total spend among all parties is less than the amounts on individual candidates in *state* (not US) senators or individual US congressmen

It’s even amounts aside, completely bonkers to spend a penny on him. I don’t think you could find a worse candidate, even in the 2026 GOP. Spending $250m is one thing, spending it in a guy so corrupt he’s losing Texas…wow

When I was a kid, I used to think of great B movies like TREMORS and THE MUMMY as the baseline of what a movie should be. Sadly as a man in my 40s, I now recognise they are actually outstanding films, and the average is way, way, worse. bsky.app/profile/drew...

Although that year (1984) my sister, nine years older than me, showed JAWS on Betamax and took me to the cinema to see TEMPLE OF DOOM. The 80s, man. Traumatic but lifelong love of movies though.

I think craft at the line level; is it ‘there’, where isn’t it working. This one has a specific device which needs to work (I think it mostly does) but it needs to be carefully examined
