I don't fly, I don't use my passport, I don't cross borders, I fear police and interactions with authorities and I'm a lucky one: I pass as cis and I have updated IDs. I'm still petrified. Do I even have a future in this country? My opinion shifts, day to day. Every trans american faces this crisis.

If these changes go through, it will be impossible to do effective science in the United States. Logistically, labs will not be able to function under these constraints. Team science—vital to almost every discipline—will be impossible under the rules around international collaboration.

5) And then there are bizarre overreaches, even if small in comparison: Requiring funding agencies to provide advance approval at the time of grant submission to attend a conference. Banning page charges making it impossible to comply with existing federal open access funding mandates.

4) International scientific collaboration is severely restricted. For the better part of a century the greatest strength of US science has been its position as a focal point of international research activity. This policy dooms US science to inevitable irrelevance.

A few critical points: 1) Program officers will be replaced by political appointees in the grantmaking process. The role of peer review—originally introduced into US funding agencies for large part to prevent political interference with scientific research—is strongly diminished.

Of all the harm this administration has done to US science, today's proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded and administered is the most damaging yet. The text of the federal register document is impenetrably tedious by design, so here's an excellent summary of what it says.

A fine black toad with bright white fingers, toes, and lips, and brown pustular blobs along its legs, resting on a dark green leaf. A black and white toad on a green fern frond. The head and limbs are grey, and the body black. A toad looking at the camera over a brown leaf, its black body splotched with yellow and white. It is very Halloween-core. A black toad with huge yellow glands on its legs, head, arms, and parts of the back. Jack Skellington himself could hardly have painted a more Halloween-flavoured toad.

🚨 ‼️ At 8:30 tonight, the South Carolina Senate Medical Affairs Committee quietly sent out an email announcing that on October 1 at 9:30 a.m., a subcommittee will hear public testimony on Senate Bill S.323.
A digital graphic with a headline reading “BREAKING NEWS” in bold white and blue text. Below, large text says, “SC Abortion Ban… here they go again!” A smaller blue banner reads, “The GOP Senate is back on their bullshit. They are bringing their total abortion ban bill (S.323) back for a vote!” The body text states that on October 1st, the Medical Affairs subcommittee will hear testimony from South Carolinians before voting to remove abortion access in the state. It lists harmful elements of the bill, including:
	•	No rape, incest, or fetal anomaly exceptions
	•	Felony charges for doctors, nurses, and helpers
	•	Criminalizes helping a minor leave the state
	•	Allows civil lawsuits against abortion providers or anyone aiding in abortion
	•	Allows lawsuits for “wrongful death” of an aborted fetus

At the bottom, the text includes the handle: @PalmettoStateAbortionFund. The design uses blue and white with bold, urgent typography.
