The fact that this is soon going to be everywhere is crazy. In a good way, and a bad way.

Worth listening to. Pinch your nose and get past that it's on Bill Maher's show. Nice to hear somebody firmly pushing back on the tire bit of 'cities vs the "real" America'.

I'm not even a cyclist in T.O. but man, this 100%. The whole thing is some culture war BS that is ultimately bad for small business.

Adjacent house is purchased, buyer plans to build a fourplex. Size of that (approved) proposal would mean that per city code, their fireplace could no longer be used - that sucks, so I get their frustration. But they lose me on refusing the purchaser's offer to pay for their chimney's retrofit.

It is worth reading Chretien's 'My Stories, My Times' for a succinct takedown of Conrad Black as a person. Black is an excellent writer, a very sharp guy, and has repeatedly shown himself to be a prostrate sellout of his country for the U.S. and earlier, as JC put it "crumbs and a wig".

Poll needs to clarify if these my friends I'm being cheeky with, or strangers I'm upset with. But in either scenario, 4% is hilariously unhinged.

For sure some dunkable elements of his answer here - e.g. not knowing his address is clearly a) a lie; and b) ridiculous. But his broader point - that our baseline of how and where we expend our cognitive resources changes with our environment - this seems right. Especially his 'read more' advice.

This is almost certainly the different factions around Trump trying to get this into the news, so that he can tweet about it. They're betting on his inability to admit a mistake, and commit to one option or the other.

I was deputy M.E. at the WSJ when Murdoch took over, with a similar “editorial independence board.” Within 4 months, our top editor was gone, replaced by a loyal Murdoch deputy. That board raised a quivering objection, but the deed was done. If the Ellisons own CNN, they’ll do whatever they want.

We are going past $110 and staying there. Lucky if that price point does not get stuck at $120+, as the U.S. SPR is within ~30M barrels of the statutory reserve for the Dept. of Defence. Even assuming that the admin blows through this (which of course, they will) eventually China restarts imports.

It is amazing that a third of U.S. voters have gotten past 9/11 storm valour as being a political third rail. Even more so that mainstream media has accepted this as a 'normal' feature from a U.S. President. Most people would be deeply upset and worried if their parent started talking like this.

It's actually worse! Fox News can't algorithmically determine for their individual viewers: - When you are most likely to consume content; - Which biases disarm your critical thinking; - Which messaging styles are uniquely persuasive to you; - Who can challenge information post-consumption.

As someone who really wants AI companies to be limited in the damage they're doing to the world, it's incredibly frustrating when the most vocal contingent of AI skeptics keep repeating the idea that AI doesn't work at all. Maybe that was the case 3 years ago but not any longer.

This is pretty fucking wild. I had assumed in a worst case scenario he would target blue zip codes and toss ballots based on technicalities but this is even worse than I imagined.
Not only is this system astonishingly untested, USPS has simultaneously implemented an
impracticable zero percent failure rate.
13 When ballots are submitted to USPS in large-volume
batches, if any one ballot in the batch cannot be verified against the Portal, all ballots in that
batch will be rejected. For example, if a state election official brings a batch of 10,000 ballots to
USPS and USPS is unable to match just one of those ballots against the Portal – because, for
example, someone has recently changed their name after marriage or they’ve moved – then
USPS would refuse to mail the remaining 9,999 ballots as well. As the whistleblower notes,

The future is unwritten, but all at once: GOP voters are rejecting Trump endorsed primary candidates, GOP nominees, who gained Trump’ support by lying about the 2020 election, are quietly recanting, and, with an assist from Ossoff, everyone’s laughing at the Trump apparatchik class.
