Yes, the danger is to go from saying a true thing to saying a false thing. So don't do that. Probably still worth saying the true thing though.

This is really interesting. The struggles of cognitively disabled people raising questions about how human rights are conceived of. Read while bearing in mind that today's eugenics-adjacent new utilitarians consider cognitively disabled people to be less than fully human.

All these really clever systems we have come to depend on are so fragile and vulnerable. If you read one thing today which makes you wonder if, really, we need to learn how to start canning our own food, use a mechanical timepiece, travel by horseback, and turn off the internet, this is it.

A fascinating editorial decision from the BBC, to make the headline a scaremongering “AUTISM AND ADHD ARE BEING OVERDIAGNOSED”, and then, four bullet points later, have the author of the report quoted as essentially saying “nah, that’s bullshit, actually”.
ADHD and autism at risk of over-diagnosis, says report, as author warns of rise in mental ill health
Summary
• An official review in England finds there is a risk of people being over-diagnosed with
ADHD and autism - three key findings from the report
• As well as neurodevelopmental conditions, the review looks at mental ill health, particularly in younger people. Our health correspondent explains the difference
• It was commissioned earlier this year after Wes Streeting, then the health secretary, said there was an "over-diagnosis" of mental health conditions
• Speaking to Radio 4's Today programme earlier, review chair Prof Peter Fonagy said Streeting was "with respect, completely wrong"

Fake news. I commute by train. No hordes of young blokes in ties that I can see. And I cannot believe that anyone who goes through the British school uniform regime continues to wear a tie once they no longer get detentions for not doing.

Some really valuable insights here (though I don't know if there's much chance of circumventing a culture war that's being waged as a crusade against welfare spending).

I don't think concern trolling is where Monbiot's coming from, to be fair. I think he's wrong, but sincere, in saying that moderating some positions could win the power to make changes. It's a classic social democrat / reformist position.

That's not the critique of the Left. Copyright/IP, a form of enclosure, is not ours to defend. It's one of the critiques we hear the most from because there's money riding on it. But it will be the last thing on my mind on the day we burn down the data centres and guillotine the techbro CEOs.

Glaciers are not only retreating but collapsing, the Alps becoming an iceless rockscape.
[Glaciologist Matthias] Huss said scientists were increasingly seeing glaciers collapse from the inside – the result of internal streams beneath the ice that excavate caverns – rather than simply retreating from surface heat.
“You have huge holes like cheese in the middle of the ice that have collapsing roofs,” said Huss. “These are processes that tear the glaciers apart and make them retreat even faster.”

Yes! It is! That's quite the insight, I am now racking my brains for counter examples
Even in mystery, so formally plot-driven and end-directed, resolution is by no means always the goal. The end of a mystery is very often a let-down. The end of most novels is a let-down. As Leonard Woolf remarked, the journey not the arrival matters. I’ve lost my copy of Aspects of the Novel and am trying to recall E.M. Forster’s definition — “the novel is an extended prose fiction that ends disappointingly”?

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Criminal damage doesn't seem to cover slashing a boat *with someone in it* though, or actively obstructing and disrupting lifesaving rescues. He's put people's lives in danger, deliberately. Surely that's some kind of intent to harm or something IDK I'm not a lawyer.

"We hear you. You were right. You're under arrest." Gestures matter and I'm really glad he's saying this, but it's pretty brutally incongruous with the mass arrests of Palestine Action / @defendourjuries.bsky.social supporters outside the conference. Nice words, now do actions.

Children's books are more plentiful than ever, and when imagination goes cold you retell a story you were told or relive an experience. Language is about the sharing of meaning across minds, and whatever my shortcomings as a parent or storyteller there's no way the surveillance robot can do that.

Will keep boringly saying this (no disrespect to OP): it's not a health surcharge. It's not hypothecated to the NHS; you can't choose not to pay it and thereby eschew healthcare. You could equally call it an education or roads surcharge. It's using the NHS's sanctified status to rip off immigrants.

I haven't read Griffiths but that seems wrong. There's more porosity and cross-fertilisation between fascism and the broader far right and authoritarianism than that implies. Or is that what comes after the "however"?

This is correct: 18 year olds have never known a country where there was a credible belief that next year might be better than the one that preceded it, rather than it being dumber, uglier, nastier and more cruel. And that’s not a force of nature, it has been quite deliberately inflicted.
thing bugging me:
When I went to uni, the UK's IMF bailout was a dim and distant thing that happened around the time we were born. Never came up in conversation.
Kids starting uni now are the cohort born in 2008 who presumably see the GFC the same way. Ancient history, ok boomer etc

Replacing television and film with Whatever All This Is has gone so well. The bright future that the disrupters came up with (a version of having a very big hard drive of indifferent content you can’t navigate and don’t value) has worked about as well as it did for music. We’re all so much poorer.

Yeah too many people have seen too many films. The loft full of tins comes in handy long before the post-apocalypse fantasy, though. Supply chain shocks and fluctuations in price and availability are going to become much more common. Good to have a cushion against them.

To be fair, neither Palestinians nor the solidarity movement have avoided that question. In particular, the call for a single democratic state in which Palestinians and Israeli Jews would all be able to vote, like Black and White South Africans post-Apartheid, has been put forward for decades.
