I completely missed that the Anthropocene had been Plutoed two years ago. I'm no geologist, but to me it had seemed like such a powerful insight that we're poorer without.

I miss the stars. Sometimes I forget they were even there to miss. We have lost so much, to mourn and to win back.

Glaciers are not only retreating but collapsing, the Alps becoming an iceless rockscape.
[Glaciologist Matthias] Huss said scientists were increasingly seeing glaciers collapse from the inside – the result of internal streams beneath the ice that excavate caverns – rather than simply retreating from surface heat.
“You have huge holes like cheese in the middle of the ice that have collapsing roofs,” said Huss. “These are processes that tear the glaciers apart and make them retreat even faster.”

Yes! It is! That's quite the insight, I am now racking my brains for counter examples
Even in mystery, so formally plot-driven and end-directed, resolution is by no means always the goal. The end of a mystery is very often a let-down. The end of most novels is a let-down. As Leonard Woolf remarked, the journey not the arrival matters. I’ve lost my copy of Aspects of the Novel and am trying to recall E.M. Forster’s definition — “the novel is an extended prose fiction that ends disappointingly”?

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

"We hear you. You were right. You're under arrest." Gestures matter and I'm really glad he's saying this, but it's pretty brutally incongruous with the mass arrests of Palestine Action / @defendourjuries.bsky.social supporters outside the conference. Nice words, now do actions.

Will keep boringly saying this (no disrespect to OP): it's not a health surcharge. It's not hypothecated to the NHS; you can't choose not to pay it and thereby eschew healthcare. You could equally call it an education or roads surcharge. It's using the NHS's sanctified status to rip off immigrants.

This is correct: 18 year olds have never known a country where there was a credible belief that next year might be better than the one that preceded it, rather than it being dumber, uglier, nastier and more cruel. And that’s not a force of nature, it has been quite deliberately inflicted.
thing bugging me:
When I went to uni, the UK's IMF bailout was a dim and distant thing that happened around the time we were born. Never came up in conversation.
Kids starting uni now are the cohort born in 2008 who presumably see the GFC the same way. Ancient history, ok boomer etc

Replacing television and film with Whatever All This Is has gone so well. The bright future that the disrupters came up with (a version of having a very big hard drive of indifferent content you can’t navigate and don’t value) has worked about as well as it did for music. We’re all so much poorer.

Here is the thing: if this is obvious to everyone, there are a few options for what's happening. A) they like and support the far right, B) the Westminster court is so incestuous and self involved, and so dominated by the right wing press, that politicians don't understand this.

Any lives lost due to this closure should be laid firmly at the feet of the far-right agitators who caused this. The way in which anti-asylum activists are putting more and more people at risk should be a wake up call that it is time to genuinely combat them, rather than pandering to their ideology.

No sympathy for Milo and the "free speech martyr grift" he's milking this into, but it's still staggering to see how vicious these MAGA people are even to each other. It's true that Trump's achievement hasn't been to create them but to give them something to cohere around.

Sobering thread. @doctorow.pluralistic.net compares a potential post-Trump succession to the anarchic kleptocracies of the post-USSR transition, and warns that the alliance between MAGA and Big Tech gives them an additional weapon of mass destruction to hold the world to ransome with.
