For years, organisations like Sex Matters have claimed their voices are being silenced. They have presented themselves as champions of free speech, arguing that gender-critical beliefs are excluded from public debate and marginalised by institutions.
Yet when one of the world's most respected human rights organisations published research that challenged their campaigning, their response was not to engage with the evidence or publish a rebuttal. Instead, they publicly declared that they were prepared to sue for defamation.
Freedom of expression cannot be a principle that applies only when you agree with what is being said. If you demand the right to criticise others, you must also accept their right to criticise you.

The consequences reach far beyond Amnesty. If charities, researchers and human rights organisations begin censoring themselves because they fear expensive legal action, then public debate is no longer shaped by evidence, but by who has the deepest pockets and the most aggressive lawyers.
This comes at a time when transgender people in the UK are facing levels of state-sanctioned segregation unprecedented in modern British history. Rather than confronting the human impact of those policies, some organisations appear more concerned with silencing those who scrutinise their role in bringing them about.

Many of the ideas and legal strategies now shaping the UK's culture wars did not originate here. They have been promoted internationally by organisations such as Alliance Defending Freedom, which has played a significant role in campaigns to roll back LGBTQIA+ rights and reproductive rights in the United States. Britain should be extremely cautious about importing those tactics into our own democratic debate.
A society does not lose its freedoms overnight. It loses them when powerful organisations can campaign without restraint, yet seek to suppress those who hold them to account.
That is why TACC stands with Amnesty International UK.

I have raised a formal complaint to the EHRC regarding Dr Mary-Ann Stephenson's conduct during yesterdays Select Committee. Laughing at concerns raised is unacceptable:

I am writing to raise a formal complaint regarding the conduct of Dr Mary-Ann Stephenson during her appearance before the Women and Equalities Committee and Joint Committee on Human Rights on 9 June 2026.

I watched the session expecting to hear serious discussion about serious issues. What I did not expect was laughter.

Throughout the session, concerns were raised about the impact of the EHRC's policies and guidance on transgender people. MPs discussed exclusion from public life, the consequences of removing access to facilities, the practical difficulties created by the Commission's approach, and the risks faced by a community that already experiences disproportionately poor mental health outcomes and elevated rates of self-harm and suicide.

Again and again, Dr Stephenson laughed.

Perhaps there is an innocent explanation. Perhaps she found the questions amusing. Perhaps she found the concerns implausible. Perhaps it was nervous laughter. Whatever the explanation, the result was the same. People watching were left wondering why a representative of the UK's National Human Rights Institution appeared unable to discuss the potential harms facing a marginalised community without chuckling her way through the conversation.

I confess I may have misunderstood the EHRC's role.

I had always assumed that a human rights body was supposed to listen when people raised concerns about discrimination and exclusion. I had assumed that warnings about worsening mental health, increased vulnerability, and social isolation would be treated with gravity. I did not realise the appropriate response was somewhere between a smile and a laugh.

Perhaps the Commission can clarify whether concerns about suicidality are now considered light entertainment.

Because from the outside, that is how it looked.

Trans people are repeatedly told that they are overreacting. Then they watch policymakers discuss removing access to spaces they use every day. They watch public bodies propose restrictions that affect their ability to participate in society. They watch campaigns portraying them as threats, dangers, or problems to be managed. Then, when concerns are raised about the consequences, a senior EHRC figure laughs.

What exactly are people supposed to take from that?

The EHRC regularly speaks about dignity, respect, inclusion, and human rights. Those are admirable words. However, words lose their value when the people affected by policy decisions feel they are being laughed at by those claiming to protect their rights.

The Commission cannot reasonably expect trust from transgender people while appearing indifferent to the consequences of its actions. Trust is not built through press releases and mission statements. It is built by demonstrating that the lives of affected people matter.

Watching Dr Stephenson's performance before Parliament, it was difficult to escape the impression that the concerns of trans people were being treated as an inconvenience rather than a human rights issue.

I would therefore like the Commission to explain:

• Whether it considers Dr Stephenson's conduct during the session appropriate for a representative of a National Human Rights Institution.

• Whether it recognises the impact that repeated laughter during discussions of exclusion, harm, and suicidality may have on public confidence.

• Whether Dr Stephenson wishes to clarify why she repeatedly laughed while concerns were being raised about the consequences of EHRC policy and guidance.

• Whether the EHRC believes such conduct reflects its commitment to "dignity and respect" for all protected groups.

Human rights are not a joke.

Exclusion from public life is not a joke.

The deterioration of mental health amongst a marginalised community is not a joke.

Suicide is not a joke...
