All Bike lane projects are road safety projects: making it uncomfortable+ impossible to drive fast was the point. If you want to drive fast, do it on a highway, away from where people live, walk & cycle. People were driving at an avg speed that would kill a human and that's what will happen again.

My @thestar.com column: Brad Bradford and Chris Alexander talk about Toronto's budget like it's some mystery we need outside experts to solve. But the mayor's spending record is all public, and tells a simple story of priorities. No mystery. Just math. www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

Matt Elliott: There’s no mystery behind Mayor Olivia Chow’s budget record — there’s just math
Lately, the leading candidates taking on Mayor Olivia Chow in the race for mayor have taken to referring to the city’s budget like it’s some great cosmic mystery. A riddle

Don’t forget about your local council race. Mayoral politics get all the (limited) oxygen but a councillor can affect your neighbourhood even more. Do they want to solve city wide problems but opt their ward out of the solutions? We’ve got a few of those. My @thestar.com column this week.

Shawn Micallef: Toronto election: Here’s why you should pay attention to your local council race
In an election year Toronto’s differences are smoothed out and can be overlooked by mayoral candidates who need to deliver uncomplicated ideas, to the whole city, as quickly as possible.

Moneris, the Canadian system used to process 5 billion of transactions annually for 325,000 points of sale, is being sold by the owners (RBC and BMO) to a US private equity firm. I don't think this protects Canadian digital sovereignty. I signed a petition for Ottawa to intervene, and you can too.

Just as “no white after Labour Day” is antiquated, so is the idea that #publicjoy ends with summer. Find a tree-filled walking route & watch the leaves turn. Get an art gallery membership. Scan your local library’s special events. Wear vibrant sweaters. Schedule walks with friends. Stay outside.

SUVs disproportionately kill people who they hit and older people disproportionately die when hit. It’s time to abandon integration with US safety standards and adopt European ones, reduce speed limits, bring back speed cameras, and stop this carnage.

Bikes aren’t the reason why traffic is bad. Cars getting in the way of other cars are. The best way to reduce traffic is to give people other options to get around. That means bikes. And transit. And pedestrian-first streets.

The media relentlessly promotes the narrative that progressives are too mean to anti-vaxxers and we must bring them around with compassion. This isn't true and isn't helping. The more public sympathy you show them, the more empowered they are in their beliefs. www.statnews.com/2026/08/19/s...

Definitely share @graphicmatt.com's disappointment in his latest column on how only one councillor - Gord Perks - stepped aside for this fall's election and another is running for Mayor. We really need term limits to allow for new blood at City Hall. #TOpoli #TOelxn26 www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...
thestar.com
Matt Elliott: Gord Perks left Toronto council with a bang. Why won’t his long-serving colleagues ever leave?
With Toronto councillors serving for decades and Doug Ford blocking key reforms, term limits may be the only way to get new voices at city hall.

My @thestar.com column: Toronto's not the only city in the world. It's true. I swear. I looked it up. And a lot of these other cities, it turns out, have car-free streets. With clear examples to follow, we REALLY don't need to make pedestrianization so complicated www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...
thestar.com
Matt Elliott: Other cities close streets to cars all the time. So why does Toronto get tripped up by the idea of a pedestrian street?
Creating a bit of long-term dedicated space for pedestrians in Toronto is not something that should require years of study.

We were in Kensington Market yesterday to watch the Canada soccer win! Also: if you’re not from Toronto, yesterday was first visit to Kensington & you've been to other major cities, you would find it both insane & unfathomable that pedestrianization only happens one Sunday a month & not every day!

I'll be repeating this to anyone who will listen when I attend the Little Italy Festival on its last day Sunday: "[W]hat all those people hanging out and the overwhelming success of a festival such as Do West demonstrates, is a deep desire to see streets opened up to pedestrians more."

Shawn Micallef: The Do West Fest chaos showed how much Toronto loves street festivals. Let’s go car-free more often

Seriously, the solution to "crowd management" is pedestrianization more often, in more places, and for longer. Instead, transportation services just used "risks associated with high attendance" as a reason to not support Church St. pedestrianization. There is so much rot at city hall.

My @thestar.com column: City Council has an attendance problem. Councillors are missing votes and risking quorum. But an election year offers a simple opportunity to fix things: vote out some of the frequent no-shows, elect some new reps who care more about the job. www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

Though newbie councillors tend to show up more than veteran representatives, their value extends far beyond their attendance record.
