When Galway gets its second ring road, "90 percent" of through traffic will disappear (source: Cllr Peter Keane FF) and "60 percent" of regular car commuters will switch to public transport or active travel (source: Lorna Siggins, Irish Times). The city, and Salthill 👇, will be car free at last!

Utterly predictable — and you couldn't make it up. Bóthar Stiofáin around lunchtime today.
A dozen or so cars parked on a brand new bike path, Bóthar Stiofáin, Galway.

Nearby, an event is being held to mark the unveiling of a plaque commemorating Steven Griffin, an Irish soldier who was killed in Lebanon (1980) while on duty with Unifil.

Well the fucking Outer Bypass has been given permission by An Coimisiún Pleanála with the only way to appeal being a judicial review. 80 family homes demolished. The ruination of an unspoiled area. Destruction of communities. Habitat obliterated. More cars. #galway #speirgorm

Madness. Approving a motorway in a climate crisis. Roads don't reduce traffic, they create it. It's induced demand: build it, they will drive. Meanwhile, public and active transport get sidelined. More emissions. More inactivity. More locked-in carbon. We're pouring concrete on a burning planet.

This is big news. We are watching the process too 👀. If extra funding has indeed been sourced for this it shows an intent from @galwaycity.ie which goes beyond rhetoric. Galway needs more funding for Active Travel projects, including big infrastructure and small wins. Ask your TDs for more!

There are a lot of positive sounds coming from City Hall this past year. This would be a real test of the city's commitment to a new way of getting around. My guess is that national funding would follow for the many other projects needed in Galway with this demonstration of intent. An investment.

Assuming a ring road is in place by 2040, the report suggests a short-term alleviation of traffic flow in the city centre after 2030. “However, increased transport demand will eventually result in the bypass becoming congested without further intervention,” the report warns.

Shameless Garda PR blitz links road deaths to visibility issues in cases where there is no link
Comment & Analysis: Sadly, I have to start this article by saying, for the avoidance of doubt, nothing in this article says 'don't be visible'. Lights are a legal requirement, and it'd be a good start if the Gardai enforced them, and people walking should take steps to be visible on unlit roads. I get it, nobody likes it when people are walking on unlit roads in the dark without lights and wearing dark clothing, and it's annoying when some cyclists think they are ninjas.
