Galway councillor promises no more projects to make walking and cycling safer
-- "I’m happy with my position" councillor says when challenged by a local advocate. A Galway councillor, Cllr Shane Forde (Fine Gael), has vowed to block any future project to make roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists while he's still on the council. This morning he posted a photo of the September traffic on Castlepark Road on Facebook, and said: "This is the direct result of multiple traffic lights on the new scheme and the taking away of the slip lane at ATU.

The underpass connecting the greenway routes out of town to Atterish, and the main greenway to and from Newport will open in the coming week."

Why I don´t talk about helmets? I lost too many wearing them. On Car-Free Day, 22 September, Nicolò, a seven-year-old child, was killed by a motorist in Turin. He was riding in the bike lane, wearing his helmet, riding to school with his father. A car driver killed him anyway. Photo Fabio Ferrari

This is highly irresponsible from the government. They are behaving like sugared up children in a sweetshop rather than stewards of a complex society. Where is the opposition? Is there a strategy to incentivise public transport at all? Look at Galway traffic these past few days: gridlock for all?

What brought me back to the bicycle and introduced me to city design as an adult was the Netherlands. What really sold it to me was how scenes like this are unremarkable to the Dutch, but how in my current country, they'd stand out like a sore thumb. That convinced me things can be different.

There's a long-held assumption that celebrities only travel by private chauffeur. David Byrne's ride to Met Gala, Timothée Chalamet's Lime biking and now Cate Blanchett's Brompton getaway show this to be increasingly untrue. We shouldn't be so surprised when people use the best tool for the job.
