So funny sitting in a TOD session, and the question came up which corridors in your city is problematic and can be improved upon, everybody started naming state highways. The former director of WSDOT is in here, and had some comments about it. Very good discussion ultimately.

First session at #APAWA2026 in the books. E-bike mobility safety. Generally fine, but I don’t understand why we can’t better regulate the car industry (speed limiters) like we’re doing with e-bikes? ‘Drivers get an education and have a licensure responsibility’ was one panelists excuse 🤢

The majority of military members vote by mail through absentee ballots in their state of enlistment. Those who have changed their place of residence *may continue to vote by mail.* It does not take a day to fill in a ballot. That being said: turn Election Day into a national holiday for everyone

We the people have built the infrastructure necessary for corporations like Amazon to thrive. Our schools educate their workers. Our transportation network transports their goods. If they’re not going to reinvest in our community through living wages, we must force them to.

It’s absolutely incredible how incessantly people want to make things worse because we aren’t actively aiding and abetting their quest to pillage all our collective resources for themselves.

Filling Pike Place with people and programming is so much better than it being a car park. Why don't we make this permanent??

My public comment
Good Evening,

Word has been going around that there is a serious consideration to allow car traffic in Pike Place market over the winter on some days.

I’m just giving my gut reaction to that, I don’t feel like sugarcoating or being diplomatic:

Why can’t we have nice things? Seriously, in what world does having car traffic on Pike Place benefit *anybody*? I have never seen a Seattle specific poll so strongly in consensus as the 98% of those polled preferring the car free version of our market. Cars are loud, smelly, dangerous, and take up a disproportionate amount of space everywhere they’re allowed to go. And for the life of me I cannot wrap my head around why some people think we *have* to let personal automobiles invade every aspect of our lives. Just let us have one nice thing. Please. Just one nice thing that isn’t ruined by cars. Is that too much to ask?

I'm hearing some concerns up about implementing "no turn on red" as a default policy in Seattle, so it's worth remembering that allowing turns on red only saves "1-5 seconds" on average for 🚗 drivers, meanwhile it increases 🚶🏼 crashes 60% and 🚴🏾‍♀️ crashes 100%. what is holding back wider adoption of e-bikes is the fact that road networks in most n. american cities are just too scary for normies no wayfinding. disconnected wheeling networks. distracted drivers. too high speed limits all of it adds up to locking people into car dependency

SDOT's backsliding on Pike Place has a lot of us freaked out. Not just for Pike Place but for all of the pedestrianization efforts happening around the city. If @transportation.seattle.gov can backstab us on Pike, they can do it on Crockett and Barbara Bailey and Occidental and everywhere else.

I have been beating this drum for years now. The throttle is not the problem! The real issues are *speed and acceleration*. Imagine two bikes: one with a throttle and a top speed of 12 mph, and the other that is pedal assist only to 40 mph. Which one would be the bigger safety issue?

Step 1: Charge for parking. *EVERYWHERE* Step 2: Ignore people complaining about it Step 3: See immediate adoption of non-SOV modes Step 4: Public outcry for better transit, bicycle, and pedestrian infrastructure overwhelms the status quo.

We’ve been a one car household since 2013. When our kids started going to pre-school in 2023 I quickly tired of the bus schedule with two year olds and got a cargo bike. There’s nothing extreme about this. It’s sensible, cost effective, and my kids love leaving the house with me.

Exhibit F of why we need better transit and bicycle infrastructure. Cars are great tools, but when it’s the *only* tool it brings added expense and time commitment to individual lives.

A theme here is that if a person inside city government intervenes on behalf of a restaurant losing parking spots or a random driver getting a parking ticket, that's seen as constituent services. If another government insider works on behalf of keeping people alive, that's seen as advocacy.

By a 9-0 vote, the Seattle City Council just sent a renewal of the 2020 Seattle Transit Measure to voters this November. The 0.3% sales tax measure will ramp up the city's supplemental Metro bus service by 100,000 hours per year, or around a third, on top of funding other city transit programs.

Personally, our family does most of our checkups, grocery shopping, kid hauling, and errands by bike and transit. But not every mode of transportation is going to work for every person, for every trip — and that's okay! The point is to give people safe and convenient options for how to get around.

If people on e-bikes followed the same rules as drivers do, we would run red lights, bike the wrong way, stop in the middle of car lanes, drink and bike, text and bike, speed, and block crosswalks…

People do not buy ebikes because they are happy to spend thousands more than they would on a regular bike. People buy ebikes because they save thousands compared to the car journeys they replace. That is the key distinction that many policy makers the general public miss or don’t understand.

Any time a pedestrian or bicycle route (in this case both) are closed for construction, detours must be of equal or greater protection. The easiest solution in this particular case is to put jersey barriers up protecting the current parking lane for bike/ped travel

Okay, this is worth an actual book. Kind of a what came first, the racism or the justification. Ostensibly, trip generation means higher density housing would cause residential streets to “fail” from a level of service perspective, even though multifamily generates rates at half the rate SFR does.
