When the convoy came to town, a lot of people said Ottawa was a city of wimps. "In XYZ city, we'd never let people get away with that!" But Ottawa residents *value* freedom of assembly & we also know how biased people are when it comes to who they will & won't arrest.

This and "expert" talking heads saying facile things like "the best outcome is getting a deal done." OK, thanks, nobody had thought of that option! Thing is, the other side is an untrustworthy nut and there is no scenario at the moment in which a new deal is fair or respected for more than a day.

A car dealership in the province posted a picture of a Sikh man buying a new car with his wife/girlfriend on Facebook. There are now a bunch of laughing emojis and racist comments. People are posting just awful things with their full government names. The dealership has since deleted the post.

This week I've been telling everyone who will listen that this garbage is an inevitable extension of car culture and toxic masculinity in general in a city where there's no traffic enforcement and people speed and run red lights on a daily basis. Easy to know why they expected to get away with it.

For as long as I can remember there have been warnings about the looming demographic pain and its effects on health care, the economy, etc. But for decades, we've still doubled down on building car-dependent communities that will become prisons for anyone who becomes unable to drive.

This kinda reminds me of when I moved to NB and got my licence changed over. The person at Service NB asked me "do you need glasses to drive?" and I was like "I don't know, you tell me!" No vision test. Between being a student and not having insurance, I hadn't been to the eye doctor in years.

Times change and I get the economic here, but this still makes me sad. Joining the T&T as a summer intern, typing out a story on a deadline while seeing the giant rolls of paper fly through the presses out of the corner of my eye was such an exciting experience.
